If you could borrow a scythe, that would probably be the best tool for a brutal chop

Barbara, as you probably know most grasses look good throughout the winter, so in my opinion, it's best to do any cutting back between now and early March. As Darryluk says, you can cut pampas back as hard as you like, but with a mature clump such as yours, not always an easy task. I would probably cut it back anywhere between 2-3 feet from the ground.

These can be cut back very hard at the end of the season,be brutal.Other than that feed with 4 to 6 ounces of Growmore round the base.

It is looking so delicate yet brave enough to be amongst the first blooms of the season.

lol lol ok I agree with you! The common names are not ones to conjure the beauty of the plant. I'll just practice the pronounciation ;o )

Beautiful plant. Why do they give such long latin names to GRASS ??
;o )

Looks All Fluffy :D

what a lovely colour!

Wonderful pics of your orchids Spritz.

HeHe this daffodil looks like its got eyes& a nose lol :)

How about 'Hagley Hybrid'? A large-flowered pale pink variety that flowers from early summer to late autumn (according to my clematis book). Only grows to 8 or 9 feet and prefers shade

It may also be too rampant - but tangutica is excellent - lush flowers and lovely seedheads too!

Don't forget the pruning. If they flower at different times, they will need pruning at different times and if they've become too friendly, you're making a difficult job for yourself. I've currently got 'Guernsey Cream' scrambling over my garrya on an east-facing wall - flowers about June. 'Nelly Moser' will also appreciate not being in full sun (she fades in too much light)

Those Hellebores look great! Hope mine will grow as big? :D

I think bamboo is a great plant. I have plans to add this one to my Japanese bit of the garden but the contrast with aurea might tempt me to get two ;o )

Lovely colour. We just celebrated our Ruby wedding too. We are still looking for a celebratory plant. I'm will be searching for climbing roses to scamble over pergolas, and I hope I can find a rose in a nice ruby red colour. The garden centres here are still in winter closure but I hope March will provide me with some choices.

Hi Spritz
Not related to the question, but, I noticed you were doing a new border based on purple/gold, black and white. I have discovered a great website/supplier of marvelous reasonably priced plants and you get free gifts of more plants like 10 rudbekia just for placing an order! Delivery is very good as well, I use them all the time. It is J Parker Bulbs and the weblink is www.jparkers.co.uk
Don't forget to copy and paste this time lol :)
I have seen some callas which are white and dark purple.
Happy browsing

On question - Summer bulbs

ooooh these look lovely.

If you do plant out another potful of in flower ones, then when they have finished, look for the seeds. Do not wait for them to go brown though. Carefully and gently rub the seed heads between finger and thumb, if the seeds fall off then they are ripe, even though they are still green. Sow immediately in standard compost and keep shady and watered etc. they should germinate the following spring. The seeds will NOT store, they have a very short life span.

Your digital calender sounds good idea, do you put your own photos in it ?

On blog - Christmas presents

I read this post after christmas and thought I didnt get any gardening stuff, ....then
New wellies from a friend, they are brown with cowboy logos on them, which might say something for my status in the gardening knowledge, hee hee compared to the experienced people on Grows on you.

Also I got a book from another friend, which I love called Chef's Garden by Terence Conran, quite inspiring for my vegetable garden and practicle written with illistrations and lovely photos.

And of course actually my best present that I got from my partner was a lovely blown up version to put on the wall of a Passion Flower photo that I had taken and never got round to printing off (the flower is slight variation to one I have one here, it has a bee in the middle of the flower).
