Hanging Hostas of Hampshire

We went this afternoon to the Hanging Hostas of Hampshire.

A tiny single track lane with houses either side. The house were was visiting was the last one on the left, “you couldnt miss it” as it had lots of Hostas spilling out from the front garden.

The owners live in a very modest bungalow which is detatched. The gardens swirl around the property on all sides with nothing but a few choice paths to carefully navigate through.

John and Joan (of orintal decent) have the largest and most amazing selection of Hostas I have ever seen. Large leaved ones and I mean LARGE, to the tiniest ones I have ever seen, some had leaves as small as a five pence piece. There were also scented ones. Some were in the ground but the majority were in pots. All arranged at different heights, some on upside down pots others on homemade benches/ tables to give you access to all of them. Some (and this is where they get their name from) were suspended from large poles via wire.

All of these were inter planted with Cannas, Bannanas, Ginger lilies, Lilies and Dahlias. Absoloutley fantastic.

Around the back of the house was a balcony, so up some stairs to admire the pond and waterfall, then back down to meander along the very narrow paths and eventually into the Islamic garden with its calming water feature. ?Finally we walked back down the last side of the house (past more hanging Hostas) to the front again for tea and cake.

The garden at the front is about 12ft x 35ft. The back about 35ft x 35ft. They do have access to a little bit of field at the back where they propogate all their plants.

Slug treatment is carried out in October with boiled Garlic.

Enjoy a few pics.

Thanks for the lovely photos T&T ... what a great way to show off hostas ... by hanging them up! It must help with keeping slugs & co away too. Is the garlic remedy boiled & watered in?

A wonderful garden ... is it open to the public all summer or did you go on a scheduled visit? Don't they all look fab with their variegated leaves & different sizes?!

They open for group bookings, not part of NGS. The lady is a botonist the husband does as hes told. They only ask for a donation, we charged our members and gave some to the owners the rest is going to the Air Ambulance.

What a wonderful show! And the amount of work involved to produce such a show must be amazing! Imagine all that dividing and re-potting every year. :o(( It's certainly given me some ideas ....... "Oi! Stop fiddling with that passiflora, get down off the ladder and fix me up some poles and strong wire to hold pots!" ;o))

Amazing! I wonder who does all the watering. I find it facinating the ideas that people come up with. A great blog, thanks.

This is unbelievable. I found them on the web and they have over 8oo culivars of hosta on display and the garden is packed with over 2000 varieties of plants. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. I copied this from the website of the Hosta and Hemerocallis Society. To make an appointment to visit June and John's garden, ring 01420 489186 or email them at hanginghostas@tesco.net. Entry is free.
