questions about planting grass seed

I'm planning on planting some grass seed and I have some questions about things I'm not too clear on.#1) what does it mean to cultivate soil?#2) what's the best way to spread the seeds if you're doing it by hand?#3) what's the best way to cover the soil if I don't have any equipment to do it?can i use a regular rake?or some other handy household item?#4) I'm supposed to lightly stamp or roll the seeded area after i plant the seeds.....what can i use to do this if i don't have tools for this purpose?#50 and finally does anyone have some tried and true advice on planting grass seed-all tips are helpful.....,.I have a mixture that i ordered through the mail-it has like 7 different kinds of seed or so.....PLEASE HELP!!!!! I'm new at this growing stuff and I would really love to have some grass for my son to play in instead of all this dirt and flying bugs!

Cross Pollination, but what????

This plant started growing wild, we had a garden last year that produced Watermelon, yellow crooked neck squash, and zuchinni. From what I've read watermelon and squash can't cross pollinate, so what is this? The plant is clearly squash, the fruit looks like a watermelon, and is sending out shoots like mad. I took one and cut it open and it looks like a squah variety on the inside. I've never planted pumpkins, so I'm clueless as to what this is.

As this tree was planted in memory of my dad I really want to get rid of the and keep it nice. Any ideas please?

Help with planting containers

Hi I help out with my local "In Bloom" group and we have the task of planting up a number of troughs which are attached the railings in the town centre. I have attached a photo for you to see. The problem is that each year we are faced with a huge bill from the council for watering, we have tried asking local people to help out with this but have not been too successful yet! We would like to plant them up for summer and use a mixture of plants as well as the traditional bedding, something that is not as high maintenance when it comes to watering and I wondered if anyone had any ideas on plants to try?
