A passion for garden photos

I love plant photography. It ticks all the right boxes for me as a hobby as it combines colour, texture and composition in all sorts of ways.

Flowers and foliage, landscapes and gardens are filled with such variety there is no better subject.

When I was 12 I learnt how to take a proper photograph. My mum’s old Olympus film camera made the most pleasing ker-chunk and the film seemed so precious that every photo had to be a masterpiece! Since then I have spent some time studying art and design and have found that I most enjoy using a camera to create a piece of art.

Now I use a super-duper Canon digital SLR that takes all the work out of taking photos and still ker-chunks! I also have a macro lens that allows me to take close-ups without disturbing the plant, insect or animal.

BUT, I don’t think it is essential. I have used lots of cameras have got really nice pics with bog-standard ones. My mum has now moved onto a little compact Sony digital and this is an example of what it is capable of! (Before I got my SLR)

Taking pictures is about having fun, recording things and in some cases recording a ‘work of art’ in the garden or countryside. I love seeing all the photos on this site and there are some amazing garden images here!

Photography got me into gardening and the more I grow plants and flowers, the more I take photos! I love it!

I don't know what a macro-lense is, Joey, but you do take some brilliant photos! With our digital camera I can't get the sheer quality that you do. I'm filled with admiration!

I should like to come and take lessons from you if I lived closer - you take some great pics.

Thanks both of you - a macro lens is basically the an extra long addition to the normal lens. It allows me to zoom in on the object I am photographing and get a really clear image. Apart from the gizmos - it is about a brilliant subject matter! I spend an age in the garden and have TONNES of rejects ; )

Oo, and Tussiemussie - maybe one day we will meet at a garden and share ideas for photos!

My husband has looked at your close-up photos and decided to see if our camera could do it too - he got some great shots! I'll try to insert some.
