There are a massive 150 species of acer or maple that originate in Europe, Africa, Asia and America. Acer palmatum or Japanese maple is especially popular and has at least 1000 different cultivars.
Wherever they are found, these fabulous trees provide interest to any garden or landscape especially during Autumn when they burst into fantastic flame reds, yellows and oranges.
Some have attractive bark as well as interesting foliage and the Canadians are famous for tapping Acer saccharum to make syrup!

I love the way the delicate leaves move in the breeze. Acers come into leaf quite early and are very welcome after the winter. They are, of course, stunning in the autumn.

The delicate foliage makes a stunning feature for any garden. The Acer appreciates dappled light and protection from direct sunlight and strong winds.

possibly Torwood, i'm not sure but this was labled up 'Sango-Kaku' so unless the lable is wrong? bit i know there are lots of very simular varieties, i also have an 'Orange Dream' which is practically the same all year round appart form the autumn, the orange dream turns bright orange and this one turns yellow/orange. but at the moment they look the same.

Great news Muddywellies, I hope this one is fast growing too. Our light sandy soil does tend to slow things up a bit here.

Beautiful, bright and fast growing too! Four more years and the trunk should be about 2 inches thick. I have one that illuminates a dark corner in summer. Love it!

I love the colour and shape of the leaves and the way they dance in a gentle breeze. My Mum gave me a two year old tree for my birthday two years ago. I planted it so that I can see it from the kitchen and lounge windows, it has doubled in height since then.

Diohio just said it!! Bonsai! Trouble with bonsai is starting... you have to wait decades to see the maturity of the art...I don't think I have that long...but you should try it. .get your hubby into bonsai. buy him some of those wonderful elegant bonsai troughs and tubs... and of course you will have your own too! The family that prunes together... (i love puns)

should have asked....some J-maples are hardier than others...is this lovely red feature an indicator of less than complete hardiness? I would not be able to grow that beside my igloo, right?

Appreciate the kind words y'all .! I love the curly leaves and the trunk on this one, it remains green even in maturity,(which is only a few feet taller than this one).Up close the trunk has rings around it, making it look like a green stalk of bamboo.

Are they all ok now Flcrazy? We had the same 3 nights of freezing weather but this year we didn't have any leafing out yet except for maybe a few Buckeyes. Last spring we had that late freeze and this spring some of my bushes are still trying to recover from it.

I have several acers. Where you put them will depend what colour the leaves are. Pale green or yellowy will burn in full sun. I've had to move several to a shadier place. Darker cloours are tougher but they don't like to get too dry. I think they are lovely. Good luck with them!

If they are very small (under, say, 40 cm in height) I would recommend planting them in tubs to begin with - this is because they are slightly frost tender and you can shove them in a sheltered corner over the winter if in pot. They do extremely well in tubs too, but make sure they get enough water. ALso, if small, be watchfull of slugs as they can chew around the base of the stem and effectively 'ring bark' the tree, which will kill it. fBigger/older trees are much tougher! Good luck!
