Probably too much sun during the heatwave - they don't like midday summer sun normally, never mind in a heatwave. If its that, the leaves will have looked very crispy and shrivelled from the tips into the centre.

Yes I would agree with Bamboo that that is the problem.When I water mine I always spray water all over the leaves as well and this does seem to help.
