Gee i'm so pleased for you and Millie, its so funny as Millie was one of the names i picked aswell as Tilly, but she deserves a happy home with you, and Chloe like Smokey will always remain in our hearts, i still fill up thinking about Smokey as like you say its only a short time, but then poor Millie and little Tilly both needed someone to look after them and give them some much wonted love, anyway looking forward to seeing more of Millie.xxx

Millie looks great Gee. For some reason I can't explain, I like brindled short haired dogs, never had a a dog. She looks fit and well. I hope she settles in well and gives you and your family lots of pleasure. I like Lurchers, as well, I love to see, one loping along.

Thanks, everyone. I feel very happy having Millie around - each day she seems a bit more relaxed and doesn't keep running to check where I am. After a good walk in the woods and a romp with Stig she is now fast asleep.

What a wonderful Tale, so pleased Milly has found a happy home with you Gee she deserves a happy ending, happy for you both sob, sob!

Thanks, Carole. It has been difficult and, of course, I find myself calling Millie Chloe and that upsets me. Until I lost Mungo and looked for a companion for Chloe I didn't realise how many hundreds of dogs are looking for homes just in my corner of Kent. Heart-breaking to read about let alone see in real life.

If anyone is thinking of taking on a dog I would recommend contacting a local boarding kennel to see if they also take in homeless dogs. I didn't feel pressurised, it was just a case of 'come and look and come back as often as you like until you're sure'. The pups were adorable but my heart went out to all the older dogs just sitting and wating for homes.

I think it will take Millie a while to get used to be left alone so I will have to start off slowly, just a few minutes at a time to start with. In the three minutes I left her yesterday she climbed onto the kitchen side and helped herself to an egg. I didn't let her see me laughing - if she'd looked a bit further she would have found a big pot of dog biscuits :)

Pleased to read this Gee and feel sure Millie is going to be a great companion,
albeit probably very mischievious by the sounds of things........

7 Jul, 2010

Thanks, Deida, DD2 and Lincslass, Millie tried to help in the garden this morning - she chewed a plastic plant pot - I think she needs lessons from TT's Conker and Truffle :)

How nice to read a happy ending story, she looks lovely we looked at a greyhound but we have a cat and the kennels said it was not a good idea!! We now have a puppy, hectic but i love it!! Millie looks so much better on your next blog too. Well done you!!

Thanks, Janey and SK, Millie is settling well. It is difficult not knowing the history/background to an older dog so everything is trial and error. She is very loving and affectionate but wary of some people she doesn't know who've come into the house so we are having to work on that. She met a cat in the street but ignored it and although she sees squirrels in the woods and watches them she doesn't try to give chase (I walk her on an extending lead at the moment). I am enjoying having her and am sleeping very well at the moment because of all the exercise :)

11 Jul, 2010

I am looking forward to be able to take Rocky out for walks, got to wait for his jabs though before we can do that, be nice to go for a walk with him and like you say good excersise! Its also amazing how many people will talk to you with a dog in tow (or you in tow depending on dog lol)

Gee I had to come and meet Millie , she obviously tucked at your heart strings the moment you set eyes on her even though you tried to ignore it , she is lovely and i'm sure you will be very happy together , she has already made it her home I can tell from her relaxed laid back look ... I'm so pleased for you .. x

I've just found this after looking at your other blog, congratulations, she's a lovely dog with a very sweet expression and she will obviously keep you fit and healthy. What with all those walks and all that therapeutic stroking, you'll be telling us you're entering the London marathon next lol. By the way, don't forget to take all that stuff off the window ledge, just think how ornamental she'll look there :-)

25 Jul, 2010

Strange you should say that, Bornagain! I left Millie for an hour this morning and came home to chaos - she had climbed on to the kitchen worktop, broken the venetian blind and all my blue glass was all over the place, thankfully nothing broken or she could have been hurt. I have now removed the blind and boxed up everything from the window ledge. She has also opened and eaten a whole pack of dog treats - she has been very quiet for the rest of today so I suspect she may have tummy ache. Oh well, it's early days :)

Probably separation anxiety Gee, my Rosie was terrible at first if left. I think it's because they're rescue dogs. When we first had to leave her for any time, we locked her in the kitchen. After a while, I cleverly thought she would be happier in the lounge lying on the settee withaccess to the kitchen. When we came back she had dug up the carpet and underlay starting in the lounge doorway in a vain attempt to burrow under the door, what a mess! She was obviously hoping to follow us...How we laughed.....not, Had to buy new lounge carpet lol. I never make a fuss of her when going out, just say 'won't be long', don't touch her, and leave. For quite a while I had to take no notice of her when we came back too or she'd wee with excitement and joy!
There will be times when you wonder if you've done the right thing, but after a while, they become totally yours....and you know that you have. We eventually found a little friend, Meg, for her from the same rescue centre, Birmingham Dog's Home and they bring such joy to our lives as I'm sure Millie will to yours. Just keep everything out of reach lol:-)

What a lovely story Gee, really enjoyed that:-), Millie is one very lucky girl.
We had similar problems with Fudge when he was a pup, didn't like to be left at all, when we moved into our new house we had to cordon a area off in the garage for him with fencing ,or we'd have had no house left, not that he was left for long periods, came home one day to find he'd chewed through the fencing!!!, and emptied every box in the garage(still waiting to be unpacked from the move) but the thing that made me laugh, he'd got my husbands golf clubs out, must have fancied a few rounds, lol, anyway someone suggested one of those dog crates managed to find a really large second hand one, he loved it only had to see you put your coat on and he went in it, maybe because he got a biscuit. labradors and their stomaches, lol, always fast asleep in it when we came home, I was told by 12 months he'd stop the chewing and he did as if by magic, sold the crate for as much as I paid for it.

Thanks Sinbad. Millie is improving slowly when I leave her but it is still a bit hit and miss. One day she is fine and another she isn't. I spend a lot of time shutting doors, taking my shoes on and off, repeating all the triggers that makes her think I am leaving her so, hopefully, eventually she will accept it as normal and not worry. In all other respects she is a real little gem :)

F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C

An absolutely wonderfully written blog, as always, and a heartwarming sight to see both of you 'settling in' together!

I've missed this place, I really have:0))

Thanks, OB, glad to see you back. Four months on Millie has settled really well and I am now able to leave her for a couple of hours without mishap (most of the time!). She is a typical lurcher - very lazy :)

2 Nov, 2010

Think my stepdaughter may have some lurcher in her then:0))

Really pleased for you, it's lovely to see and hear the progress you have made together.

2 Nov, 2010

Thanks, OB, wish I'd thought of that - it fits with my grandchildren too :)
