*For months I have noticed a piece of tree lying at the edge of the lane on the way up to the woods. A few days ago, as we passed, I mentioned to my granddaughter that ‘I could do something with that’. She tried to lift it but it was too heavy for her to carry.

About an hour later she arrived at my house to pick up some shopping and was followed in by my son in law carrying the log. She had got him to drive up the lane and bring the log to me, bless her :)

Well, I’ve now done something with it!*

There are several deep saw marks in the wood so I have pushed in a little soil and some house leeks. A larger hole now houses a little brown-leafed geranium. I may have to enlarge or add some further holes but I will see how it develops.

Gee thats wonderful, I love it and that log/art piece would have cost you a fortune if purchased from a GC. Well done and it looks so natural sitting there, it will also be a hotel for beetles and spiders, at a reduced rent of course!

Your log arrangement is very artistic, Gee ...
... but it needs the final touch of the chewed-up pot on top ;o)

PS. In the short time Millie has been with you she is already looking in much better condition.. well done ....:o)

added blog to GoYpedia Logs...

Looks like millie is well settled and already up to mischief. The log is very creative, how kind of your daughter/son in law to get it for you - you must have a lovely family.

Aw bless her ... she's made more drainage holes in your pot ... what more do you want?!!

What a great idea to use the deadwood & plant it up Gee! Love it.

Err what was your Son-in-law's name, can't be Charles Atlas, he's dead now. Who ever he is he's no wimp to carry that. You were very perceptive to know just how nice/natural it would look in your garden. well done....and to your daughter too.

This lovely log might come in handy for Millie to practice her 'toothart'. Mille looks very well compared with when I last looked at her pictures. I like your blog about the log and the dog. I put interesting bits of wood under the shrubs for creepy crawlies to live in. That little birdy looks like a chip off the old block.

Love this piece of wood in your garden, it will become the perfect hideaway for insects in a short while. I haven't moved our log-pile in seven years and have seen a Stag Beetle twice, or was it two different ones, who knows ? Just nice to see them in the garden.

It looks like a cannon Gee. Nice to have it in your garden, and to see something just natural and be attracted to it. It cost nothing but brute strength!

Hi Shirley its great having a log pile isnt it and as for moving it well we havnt touched ours for years and I am sure there are many creatures living in there, did you know that stag beetles, when you see them flying they are trying to find a mate before they die, bless, and that it takes five years for them to grow to maturity!!! I was amazed to learn this when I worked in the science lab at our school.

Each time I saw the Stag Beetle it was walking, very slowly, along a garden path so I found a piece of card, let it walk onto that and put it back by the logs ! Probably the wrong thing to have done though !

Not not wrong, bless him, depends where his girlfriend was at the time !!!

Thanks for all your lovely comments :)
I will await with interest to see what moves into and under my log (probably just woodlice!!). I would love slow worms - I know they are about as I saw one up the lane recently :)

Oh I love slow worms ... my neighbour had a whole tangle of them in their compost heap last year! Amazing ... all different sizes!

I saw one down our lane a few days ago as I walked Millie - he was lying in the middle and I was afaid he would get run over so I persuaded him back on the grass verge. Yesterday I saw him again so tried again to move him only to find it was a discarded piece of shoe lace I was prodding :) I was glad no one was watching!

What a beautiful feature you now have to look at through the window, Gee. It looks terrific. As for the little, grass-like plants in front - I'm stumped!
