one of my biggest tips is never put wood next to soil.using old slabs or breeze blocks also lets the wood breathe and if done right is easier to keep level.if i was going to do decking i would use old scaffold boards.its a lot cheaper and they last much longer and look a lot diferent.
On question - laying decking
its just age of the leaves realy.there very delicate at the start of the year let alone later after a summer.i find spiders using the leaves for cover even makes them die back

if you terrace your garden that mite make it a lot easier.if you like water feactures a sloping garden is naturaly brilliant for a man made stream and pond.you could membrane terracing and put a mulch on it and just plant what you want.maybe evergreen shrubs.i hope ive helped

depends on its actual use as some seedlings could get deseases from last years plants.i would do what chrispook sais and revitealise your garden or for potting on when the plants are older
