*** ALL CHANGE HERE....***PART ONE!!

AFTER MUCH DEBATING WE HAVE REMOVED SEVERAL LARGE PLANTS THIS YEAR…..
THE FIRST TO GO WAS OUR LOVELY HONEYSUCKLE MINT CRISP ON THE FIRST ARCH, HAD STARTED TO GET VERY BARE IN PLACES…. AND HAD NOT COME THROUGH THE WINTER VERY WELL….IT HAS NOW BEEN REPLACED WITH A SMALL CLIMBING ROSE ALI BABA…..WHICH IS ALREADY GROWING AWAY!! WITH A WINTER FLOWERING CLEMATIS.

TWO ROSES HAD TO GO….. LADY HILLINGDON AND HERBERT LOBB….. NEITHER HAD DONE MUCH THIS YEAR..ALSO NEW DAWN, ON THE SECOND ARCH WE ALREADY GROW HER IN ANOTHER PART OF THE GARDEN, SO THIS WASNT TOO MUCH OF A WRENCH,SHE WILL BE REPLACED BY SUMMER WINE WHICH WAS SPRAWLING ALL OVER THE FENCE, AND HAD ALREADY REACHED 12 FT!! CLEMATIS GRANDIFLORA ON THE SAME ARCH WAS SMOTHERING ROSA COMPASSION, THE CLEMATIS HAS NOW BEEN REPLACED WITH ANOTHER, ROYAL VELOURS, WHICH WILL BE PRUNED AT THE APPROPRIATE TIME, AND NOT BE SUCH A PROBLEM AS THE GRANDIFLORA…(WE HOPE)

THE RED GRAPE VINE HAD TO GO, LEAVING THE WHITE ONE, ACTINIDA JENNY,SHE HAD MASSIVE LEAVES, AND IN THREE YEARS NEVER HAD A FLOWER….. HAVE NOT GOT THE TIME TO WAIT FOR HER TO MAKE UP HER MIND!! SO OUT SHE CAME!

OUT CAME TWO FATSHEDERA, SHAME, BUT THEY TOPPLED OVER IN THE WINTER, NOT BEING SELF CLINGING, HAVE NOW GOT AN OLD CAST IRON PUB TABLE IN THE CORNER!!EXTRA SEATING FOR WHEN WE OPEN THE GARDEN..CORNER BEING WORKED ON…….

ALL THE HOSTAS HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BORDERS, AND POTTED UP, SO FED UP WITH FEEDING THE SLUGS AND SNAILS, THERE WILL BE A HOSTA CORNER…..I KNOW MORE POTS LOL

THE MAJORITY OF THE ROSES HAVE BEEN PUT IN THE BACK BORDER, WITH CROCOSMIA, HEMEROCALLIS AND OTHER YELLOW AND BLUE PLANTS, CREATING A MIX OF BLUE YELLOW AND ORANGY/RED, HOPEFULLY, WILL WORK, WONT KNOW UNTIL NEXT JULY!!

THE FRONT GARDEN IS VERY SMALL, AND THE HEDGE WHICH STARTED OUT AS JUST TWO PYRACANTHA, WITH BIRDS ADDING SEVERAL OTHER PLANTS TO THE MIX…. WAS JUST TOO DEEP, SO THE CANOPY WAS LIFTED, TO MAKE WAY FOR HEUCHERA, HELIBORES, FERNS AND CYCLAMEN, I HAVE TO SAY I LOVE IT, OH IS STILL NOT SURE

OUR CERCIDIYPHYLLUM HAS BEEN MOVED, WAS SUFFERING AT THE TOP OF THE GARDEN FAR TOO DRY FOR IT…..THE MED TREE FERN IS IN A POT, WAITING TO FIND A MORE SUITABLE POSITION….SO EVEN MORE MOVING AROUND!

LIVING BY THE SEA DOES TAKE ITS TOLL ON THE PLANTS, SHRUBS GROW VERY LARGE VERY QUICKLY, AND NEED PRUNING OR REPLACING REGULARLY AND GROWING ROSES OTHER THAN RUGOSA WE ARE UP AGAINST IT…..BUT CANNOT RESIST THEM!

RATHER THAN BORE YOU WITH THE REST OF THE ALTERATIONS, YES THERE ARE MORE!! WILL PUT ON SOME PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE REMOVED PLANTS IN THEIR HEYDAY.

WELL THATS IT ONE AND ALL, PART ONE OF THE BIG CHANGE….WHAT HAVE YOU ALL BEEN GETTING UP TO IN YOUR PLOTS? ANY DRASTIC CHANGES IN YOUR GARDEN?
THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ, MADE ME FEEL TIRED JUST READING IT LOL

Looking forward to seeing your revamped garden, especially when it starts to regrow next year. I know from where you got the idea for a pyramid of Hostas! Leave space for a piece of Liriope Monroe White, just bought one today. Had to cut it out of the pot, so many roots, so divided it before putting some into the border.

That's fantastic - wish I had the willpower to remove things that aren't dead...
Your garden looks very beautiful.
Did you buy the arches of make them at home? I am after a new one and want one that will last - yours look great.

Siris thank you, I would love that....Oh you guessed, yes it was Roys garden, have just been looking at photographs taken over the last few years of his gorgeous garden, mind you it is not set in stone, the Hostas will stay in pots, thats for sure....
Stera they were all bought online, everyone of them........thank you for your kind comments..

The garden looked lovely but can't wait to see the finished revamp. My change is, how empty my garden now lookes with most of the weeds under control and my borders now have edges. Must get around to doing some before and after photos.

Wow!!! You have been busy Angela! I need to be ruthless in our garden - Have lost some of my much loved shrubs this summer... One of which was my beloved Daphne... I'm back now from our holidays and must get motivated to do some clearing! ;o)

Dd do you get bored or something, it doesn't seem that long since you did a lot of work in your garden, I know they are never finished as such but yours always seem to be mega changes, have you now successfully hidden that monstrosity of a garage belonging to next door, I remember you were trying so hard to hide it from your view.
I too like your arch, mine is so rickety now and it does annoy me at times, goodness knows how old it is so mustn't grumble really, I keep threatening to do away with it completely, I swear its only standing because the winterflowering Clematis is supporting it, we live on the hill and my arch is tilting to match our road....
Lovely photographs Dd.....

It's good to have big changes sometimes. Your plants looked lovely but I understand what you're saying about having to move them. I'm sure the new ones will look beautiful next summer :)

I am also going to have some changes, as you know from my blog. Don't know what exactly yet though :D

6 Oct, 2016

Made me feel tired reading it too! I've just removed three Cirsium 'Trevor's Blue Wonder' and a Geum Borisii. That was bad enough! And just to say...don't bother with Trevor's Blue Wonder anyone...I think Trevor needs his colour sight checked as to my mind its almost exactly the same as atropurpureum!

Your photos really do show those plants at their height...really beautiful. But every plant has it's day doesn't it, and some outgrow their positions far too soon. Honeysuckles always go woody very quickly on me too. I have several roses that seem to want to climb and need endless support. I think this season I'll give them a good hard prune and put in some black metal supports that won't stand out like the canes which drive me nuts!

My experiement with short clematis in the raised border has not been successful. It's just too dry in there, so they will all need to be moved this autumn and should do a lot better in damper places, but my garden is generally dry and I've had to water a lot this year...only an average summer. Still, having only been here for three years, it's early days and I'm still getting to know my plot.

Thanks for sharing the photos ...sad, but that's what keeps us interested isn't it. I was watching Helen Dillon on GW and I felt sorry for her feeling that she had 'done' her garden. That's a place I hope I never get to with this one :)

Yes HB! Lets all agree to wait till we're at least in our nineties before downsizing!

8 Oct, 2016

I love your garden blogs Dd...In the first picture is that a Fuchsia?....fabulous...:>)

9 Oct, 2016

Motty how sweet of you......yes the first picture shows a standard fuchsia......long since gone lol
Karen we cannot grow Cirsium lost Trevor the first winter it was planted!
Moving Rhapsody in Blue today.......was a big disappointment this year,
Saw Helen Dillon's garden..... fabulous, she was very upbeat, I admire her spirit, we have already downsized, moving here, but the garden is very high maintenance!!
Meadow our garden needs more order, it is very unruly in places!
Hywel you and I have a lot of work ahead of us.......I need more energy l
Lincs......lol! and yes we both get bored with the garden, we like to change it, hopefully for the better, we have almost hidden that enormous white shed, trying to hide their carport now.......it's never-ending.
HB it was sad to see some of the old plants go, but needs must, no good ignoring it and hoping it would go away,. as we both say nothing is set in stone!
Petal that is a shame to lose a Daphne, was it disease? did you lose many? I can see a trip to the GC!!
Thanks Jen, in the early days the arches were a picture, but, as usual we overloaded them, and the roses were ruined by the Montana's, although fine on their own, they were just too much, we still have more arches with Montana's, but smaller climbing roses.
Thanks all for reading my first blog,
Keep gardening!!

IT all looks very pretty Dd2.
The arch, with the rose and the Eremerus behind, in particular.

9 Oct, 2016

Thanks Paul, it all looks horribly bare now!! we lost those beautiful Eremurus unfortunately, some of my favourite plants!

10 Oct, 2016

My Eremerus didn't flower this year and has died right back so I hope it comes back and flowers next year!

10 Oct, 2016

I hope you're luckier than we were.... fingers crossed!!

I'm sure the changes you are making will look stunning next year, although your garden always looks wonderful.
We only have our little garden , but we enjoy tending it and we have quite a lot of wildlife visiting.

12 Oct, 2016

Lindak, our garden is quite small too, but both being plantaholics it is packed to the brim, we do try to encourage wildlife, but not slugs, especially the Spanish, and snails, we are lucky enough to get a wide range of butterflies, and birds, and our frogs, which we both love.....but opening the garden does put a certain amount of pressure on us to keep it looking good, I hope the changes made will be for the best, time will tell, thank you for your positive comments, always appreciated....Angela

Your garden always looks fabulous Angela ,I know from experience some plants /shrubs just don't 'do ' what you want them to do .. I only hope I can follow your example with a smaller garden if or when the time comes , last weekend we decided we would have to remove the Beautiful Rambling Rector it was smothering one of the Holly trees ,the decision wasn't taken lightly as it looks spectacular when its in flower , OH cut it off at the base with his chainsaw the trunk was very thick but then the problem was how to get it out of the Holly tree the rose was completely entangled among the branches , we decided to pull each part out using the car and a rope tied to the rose branches ,the rope broke several times , you wouldn't believe the massive pile in our front drive blocking our front gate ,we had to cut it all up and then take it out onto the field to burn on bonfire night before we could get out ( the field isn't ours but we are allowed to use it ) job done ,I suspect the rose will shoot out again from the stump ...
I shall look forward to seeing your revamped garden ,you will have fun choosing new plants :o)

Oh my goodness me Amy what a job!! it must have been huge, how long had it been growing there? I expect it will come back!
We cut down some of the Arbutus this year, and already have another one growing from the stump, it is easily 3ft! in less than six months!
Regarding new plants, have already bought them lol!!

At a guess I would say the Rambling Rector was approx 15 years old ,I must check my list , I took cuttings and grew one in the hedgerow on the ditch side ,funny thing is when its blooming it faces the neighbour the other side of the ditch ... my Arbutus is only 2 ft tall its tucked away in the greenhouse for the winter they must be a lot tougher than I thought ....
