Is it safe to use polythene to line containers in which we are going to grow vegetables?

United Kingdom Gb

I have several containers which are wide and dep enough to grown vegetables in but they will need lining what is the safest and cheapest material to line them with?

Any polythene/ black bags etc will do, remember to puncture holes in the bottom to let excess water drain away. It is also good to use a mixture, 50:50 of a loam or loam-based compost with a potting compost. This will be moisture-retentive and free-draining. Also remember that containers can dry out quickly - especially if they are in direct sunlight or a breezy spot - so it is worth mulching too!
