Tips for Growing with the Moon in December

The veggies still in the garden are looking good, the bolting leeks have all been frozen ready to go in soups and casseroles and Bulba will start the serious winter digging as soon as the ground is dry enough. So here are a few tips if you want to grow In Tune with the Moon.

Sow shallot sets and garlic cloves on the morning of 11 December or 18 – 20 December.

Planting Rhubarb: Having dug the ground to a depth of 60cm add plenty of compost or well rotted manure as this will have to last the lifetime of the plant, rhubarb does not like its roots disturbed once established. Plant rhubarb stools on 3 – 5 or 14 December, the optimum day for planting being 13th.

Sow broad bean and peas in pots or paper containers on 6 (pm) – 8 (am) and 15 – 17 December. Grow somewhere frost free such as a greenhouse or warm windowsill.

Sow seed of the following flowers on 1 – 2, 12 – 13, 21 and 29 – 30 December. Antirrhinum, Aralia, Corydalis, Cyclamen, Delphinium, Fuchsia and Viola odorata.

No work or harvesting should be done in the garden on 10 (am) descending node and lunar eclipse, 22 perigee and 23 ascending node.

Oh thank you. I want antirrhinums next year, so I'll sew them on 29 - 30th. I haven't grown them for several years but have decided to have them next year

Mg I always find your blogs interesting, but in all this time it has never occured to me that I could try your method with my flowers, how daft am I???? I`ll have to give it a go, I do grow most of my own plants in my greenhouses...

Sorry! My finger twitched and I added before I'd commented!
Moon, I don't understand the last paragraph, could you elaborate for me a wee bit? I don't want to do something wrong! I love your growing by the moon tips, my late mum was always very mindful of the moon, and she had a fab garden! Thank you for doing these blogs.

Hi Libet hopefully this will make the last para clearer:

The Earth moves in an elliptical orbit, with the Sun as one of its foci. The plane of this ellipse is called the ecliptic. The Moon also moves around an elliptical orbit, with the Earth as a focus. The plane of this ellipse is at an angle of 5˚ 9' to the ecliptic. As it moves around the Earth, the Moon therefore crosses the ecliptic twice: once when descending – this is the descending node, and once when ascending – which is the ascending node. Experience has shown that disturbances occur when the Moon is at its perigee or its nodes and these are unfavourable times for cultivating the soil, sowing and harvesting.

Thank you - added to favourites. I've heard of doing this but never seen any details of when to do what.
