We’re having a period of warm weather here and this night was calm and beautiful so around 22:00 hrs (10:00 pm) I decided to do some gardening chores. On went the headlight on my hat and the garden floodlights too and out I went to do some flushing of my ponds and pond pump cleaning and garden clean up. I find that I enjoy gardening at night just as much as in the daytime and over the years I have done the same things at night as I would in the day, even more so during the hot summer, from planting, to digging in a pond, to building a decorative wall in the garden. I’ve come to the thinking that if it looks good at night it will do so in the daylight maybe more so. Maybe me, but there is a certain feeling doing these things at night that one does not get in the day, one hears different sounds and gets different glimpses of things going on just beyond in the darkness….a feeling of mystery….of the unknown going on just beyond the lighted sphere. Never got a complaint from my neighbors about doing this type of thing and I am considerate as far as noise is concerned but it is my property and I will do what I want on it any time of day. Have any of you who are reading this ever gardened at night or do you consider my way of thinking about this aspect of gardening …..how should I say… Squirrel Bait?

Yes in my last garden in france I used to garden at night, often the only time it was possible to garden at all.
During midsomer it frquently was impossible to be out in the sun even with hats and protective clothing plus factor 50+, my sun allergy didnt help! Soon discovered how magic the nights outside were and out came my tools. I only worked when there was enough moon to see by though, but with the sound of frogs and owls and the lightshows in the distance, sheetlightning most nights dancing around the mountains...I miss that but the nights in yorkshire aren't realy conducive to night gardening, too much cloud for one thing, no frogs and I have neighbours!

I never thought of trying it. By the time it goes dark I'm ready to curl up with a book...

I can't say I've ever gardened as late as that....maybe 9.30 in the height of summer but not in the pitch black.it sounds like a great idea if you get something out of it and , as you say, doesn't seem to be disturbing the neighbours.
Your description of these nocturnal gardening activities made me smile!!

I love gardening on a warm Summer's evening until it's too dark to really see what I'm doing! Never thought of using a headlight on a hat!

Sounds such a lovely thing to do and I really enjoyed reading about this.

I am so glad that all of you do not consider this activity of mine Squirrel Bait = NUTS. If you do decide to give it a try the headlamps are LED and can be switched from narrow beam to broad beam and can even go red for night vision and are very strong. One time I was walking down one of my garden paths at night with my light off and I bounced of something. I turned on my light and found out that the something that I bounced off of was a very large orb weaver spider web strung up across the path. The strength of these webs is very impressive indeed.

My DH bought one of these head lights for me. I thought it was a joke but he was serious. I do stay out rather late but I do not use it.

Running into a spiders web would find me running for the house, I also stay out until I can no longer see what I am doing, its really peaceful then.
I can remember a neighbour of my dads used to be wandering around her garden in the early hours with a torch, when dad eventually asked her what she was doing at that hour, her response was " Catching the snails as the blighters daren't appear during the day"...

Looking at my comments to this blog and Stan's I think I must be a lazy old so and so....
But gardening until late in the evening which I've often done isn't the same as needing a headlamp - by the time that's needed I'm too tired to go on. But it sounds a good ploy for slug and snailing.

Now this sounds like a good idea for my OH - he has found a book that speaks of seed setting by the light of the moon I must tell him about this - it could be a boon down the allotment - or else a good talking point !! - I am not to keen on spiders so I will give it a miss - enjoy your day - Jane

I have gardened until it is almost dark, but not in the actual night time.
I used to enjoy gardening in the early morning ... around 5 or 6 a.m. (not in the winter though lol) I think that's the best time of day :o)

Jane, Moongrower has a blog or two about planting by the moon - perhaps your OH would be interested.

As far as early morning before sunrise since I am a few blocks from the ocean I sometimes take a walk there to see the sun as it rises above the sea. The varied intense colors of the sun and water are spectacular, more so than sunsets in my opinion. Yes, early morning around 7:00 is one on my favorite times to start gardening also. My pomerainians get the 6:00 to 7:00 time slot to do their thing.

I don't do actual gardening at night but I am one of those people out with a torch collecting up slugs & snails in the wee small hours, does that count?

Yes it does. That's called " Night Stalking".
