I gave both my oldest Phlox subulata ‘Emerald Cushion Blue’ the Chelsea chop this year after they flowered as I thought they were showing there age which is something around 10 years. I an really pleased with the progress after 5- 6 weeks here is the record of one of them.

ohh lovely new growth, does this plant do well in shade? Just wondering as I need ground cover plants for under trees and this looks perfect...

I grow them in full sun Madabouts, but they will grow in semi shade. I dont think they wouls do well under trees though?

It's certainly paid off Denise, looking lovely and healthy now. I've done this in the past with great results too but I gave mine a semi chop only 2 days ago, being all behind with things. I'm hoping they'll still flower next year.

Looking healthy Denise. I've got a white phlox but it's about 4' high, is this a giant one I've got?

Don't know about the Chelsea chop, but we have a very tasty Barnsley chop here. LOL

Thanks everyone.
Sheilar this is Phlox subulata the taller ones are Phlox Phlox paniculata such as Phlox 'Pink flame' and there is also Phlox divaricata which is woodland phlox.

nice to see yours worked :)))))) - killed of our sedums

Thats a shame Paul, I never cut my sedums (only dead head) as I think they weep - a bit like flesh? so when I want to reduce them I just pull out the root around each edge till its back to the size I want.

I am a firm believer in hard pruning and chop all my alpines back, especially my Aubrieta. I shall be adding to my collection of Phlox after seeing those. Very nice.

You are welcome. I thought these 2 looked their age this year (about 10) and I did not want to leave them and find hardly any flowers next year. Doing them straight after flowering gives them a good growing time to get a new coat for winter.

Marvelous how they've recovered :o)

Thanks Denise . . . I didn't know you could do that with P. subulata! Will try cutting mine back, and hope it's not too late? For someone who asked(?), they don't like DRY shade, but dappled seems to be OK.

I would leave it till after next years flowers have finished Sheila as you will have an ugly gap if you do it now
