Allotment - Part 1

We ventured out in the freezing cold to go and look for my allotment. Of course very few of them had their numbers on, but a kind allotment holder saw us looking puzzled and came to our assistance. Wasn’t that kind?

He was also able to give us a little background on the plot we have been allocated. Its big he said…..{gulp}….we measured it ; 14ft x 80ft (sorry don’t do metric). Its good soil he said {grin}. The gentleman who had it 4/5 years ago was a keen gardener and kept it in good heart; even had a lovely rose bed there. After he went to "the garden in the sky!….it was taken over by someone who didn’t bother much…althought I saw several plants of sprouts!! He was warned about 6 times and then evicted!!!

There is a shed, which is in not too bad a state (but I don’t like the colour of the door….ahem )…..a bench outside…..well I will need a sit down now and again. Behind the shed is a compost heap and a large plastic store (I don’t know whether the store wil be left). There is a lovely wooden compost bin too, and a pile of wooden pallets which will be very useful. I also noticed some cut lengths of drain pipes…..these will be handy as watering tubes for my dahlias!!!!!

There is the framework for a polytunnel, which will be very useful as there is no greenhouse. There are a number of beds set with wood round…but they are not actually raised beds. One of them is outlined with stone edging.

There are weeds….of course!!!…doesn’t look to be too much couch grass, but there are buttercups and the dreaded brambles……and……evidence of moles…..hm….they will have to be evicted….just read a useful remedy for this a few days ago!

The fences appear in reasonable condition as are the gates….at both ends……that will be handy….save me a long walk. Oh and the water tap is actually on my site….how handy is that :o))))))

Fortunately there is not too much rubbish lying around to be disposed of…so all in all……I am well pleased.

I have to let the Allotment Association know by 9th Jan 2010 if I wish to take up their offer…………. I live a few doors away from the Secretary so I am going to ask him if I can start doing some work before then………so watch this space..:))

Hello amblealice

Hardly anyone inherits an allotment plot to just grow and go, when we got ours we just looked for the worst scruffy, overgrown plot, you guessed it, "was ours"!

things always look worse in the dead of winter "even me!"

Like Tulsa said, once you get cracking, things will come together very quickly, have lots of fun!

I'm still in a bit of daze......keep on looking at the pics....oh my goodness...all that space for plants....whether it is fruit, veg, dahlias, annuals, perennials...there'll be the polytunnel....just think how many tomatoes, peppers,,chillies, melons....maybe a grapevine....chateau la wallace......oh the ideas whizzing through my mind.....I will be sensible though and just cultivate a bit at a time......My next blog will explain this.......

Oh I forgot to say.....thank you so much everyone for your encouraging remarks and suggestions....I do appreciate them.....xx

In answer to your question Louise........who knows what OH will do....He will probably get the the job of tidying up the shed and fixing the edgings on the beds..he's not too fit, but will help where he can.

No Stripes....nothing done last year.....but hey...I like a challenge!

Lovely big allotment, Alice, well done.
Appologies if I am 'preaching to the converted' but one of your first jobs should be to check the raspberry canes - make sure that last years fruiting canes have been cut back and that the new canes are properly staked for the coming year.
Brussels sprouts for Christmas, a bonus.

OH sprouts!

Everyones favourite but no ones friend! ........ pop pop!

I hope you don't have any snow so that you can get on with it.

I am sure everyone on the site will be envious, when your dahlias are in flower, they will be flocking to see them, and no doubt you will have plenty of questions from the other plot holders to answer.
Good luck.
