Bird cakes

Just made these, just letting them set abit then i will put them in freezer to set before i wrap them in clingfilm. All i do to make them is save some old little tubs, put some cheap lard in them, let it melt in microwave then mix bird seed, nuts, dried fruit, in fact i put any thing in them like broken biscuits, crackers, old cake, cheese, bits of fat if there is any on my bacon oh and bits out the bottom of cereal packet.Anyway when the lard as melted mix what ever you have in it, i put string in some of them to hang just anywhere some i put in in the proper bird feeders you can buy, than fill your cartons, let them set a little bit them freeze in freezer, when set wrap in clingfilm and you then have birdcakes for next to nothing.

Wonderful Clarice, a girl after my own heart, spend a fortune on birdseed and nuts, I used to make bird cake similar to yours with my grandchildren, but afraid thats a number of years ago, you have inspired me tor enew the habit. [We Lancashire gals are a shrewd lot]

These are great! I'm sure your garden is super popular with the birds. I make a similar mixture of lard and peanut butter mixed with corn flour and freeze it in a loaf pan. I then just cut off a slice and fill the metal cage I hang out back. Lots of birds eat it, esp. woodpeckers and nuthatchs.

Alright...what great ideas...will work on these...I smeared some pine cones with a mixture of peanut butter, bacon grease and some varied items last winter. The birds cleaned those right out.
