Clumps of these are coming up under the roses and azaleas in the front garden, it makes me suspect that once upon a time this garden was well tended.

Yes I think so too, and just imagine how many seeds have fallen into the ground and perhaps will emerge again in spring, now you are looking after it again. You'll have a lot of surprises.
