Hellebores are widely grown in gardens for their winter and spring flowers. Many species are poisonous!

Yes I think so too, and just imagine how many seeds have fallen into the ground and perhaps will emerge again in spring, now you are looking after it again. You'll have a lot of surprises.

If you are talking about Helleborus foetidus, then my RHS Plantfinder book says'widely available', meaning that most Nurseries have it. They would probably stock it in late winter /early spring. I don't know about seeds, I've never come across them in any catalogues. Possibly wild flower specialist firms might have it as it is a native plant?

This looks great. I'm just growing on tiny heleborus and wondered what they'd look like come next winter. Thanks

Wow.! A very unique looking hellebore. I would have guessed it to be euphorbia.
I'm sure it's very rarely seen in cultivation. I'd love to have one.!

Hazel - I bought mine at my local Notcutts Garden Centre. If you have one near you, ask them if they can get one for you. Alternatively, go to www.rhs.co.uk and use the Plant Finder. There are currently 40 suppliers, many of whom do mail order. Good luck with tracking it down.

They can be prone to disease but more often, I cut them off for asthetic reasons as the old leaves can look pretty tatty by now

A real beauty! Pity you don't know its name...but having looked it up, there is indeed a group called Helleborus x hybridus and this one looks like 'Peggy Ballard'

I love Hellebores too. I'm hoping that the three I bought from the RHS this year will turn out well and flower next year - they are meant to be doubles! Two of mine planted last year have not flowered this year - very disappointing, as one was meant to be purple.

I've got this, too - it's all over the place in my garden. I finally realised last year that I had to cut off the seed heads before they seeded themselves once again! It does provide some colour in the winter months, so I've left some plants.

And easier than H.niger. Here on acid soil, I haven't managed to keep H.niger going for more than 18 months (it needs alkaline apparently). As a last ditch attempt, I have planted it beside a path and hope it gets its roots into the cement between the slabs

It is easily available here in my part of the states and south western Canada too. I have seen a few postings from UK gardeners so you should be able find it. Welcome aboard Sarah!
