Quest for the Unklnown Plant .

Like many people lots of my early memories are of being in the garden with my father, helping him dig and sow seeds.
He would sow everything in rows as was the fashion then.
Even the flowers were in straight rows.

There was one plant however that wasn’t in a row. In fact only one specimen of this plant existed, and it grew over by my father’s shed.
It was an unusual flower and I was always fascinated by it. I had never seen it anywhere else except in our garden, but nobody ever mentioned it’s name.

Now dad wasn’t really interested in plants, and he didn’t give the garden a very high priority. As a result everything slowly but surely died off – including the plant whose name I didn’t know. But I always remembered it because it fascinated me, and I wished I knew what it was called.

Well as the years went by I had my own place – a very old cottage – and thought I’d have this flower to grow in my garden, but despite asking my mam and dad about it I never could discover what it was called. They didn’t even remember it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about” they would say – “Nothing like that ever grew here”.

Then many years later, after I got a computer, I wondered if I could find out its name, so I typed “Garden Questions” into the google page and found “Grows on You”

I put a question on the questions page with a diagram of the unknown plant. I thought just maybe someone would recognize it and confirm it really did exist, and that I hadn’t just dreamed of it.

Well, what do you think ! ….. Someone DID know what it was called :o))
and named it as Sanguisorba.

So that was it ! After all these years I had found out, and I can’t tell you how excited I was !

I immediately had to get one for my garden and sent for one on line. Actually I sent for two – the pink one I remember from years ago, and also a white one.

They arrived well packed in a box

And here they are now :-

Sanguisorba hakusanensis

Sanguisorba tenuifolia alba

I have waited over 50 years to find these plants, and I love them :o)))

11 Jan, 2010

Great story Hywel ... meant to happen! All good things come to those who wait ... and wait ... and wait! Loved the photos of the Sanguisorbas now ... they are really something!

11 Jan, 2010

Great blog Hywel, I do like a story with a happy ending. However, one question remains for me - I wouldn't say this is a commonly seen plant, so........I wonder where your Dad got it from ? :-0

11 Jan, 2010

How lovely Hywel, and what gorgeous plants they are too unusual in fact. Parents always do that deny and make you think your dreaming lol, my mum use to do it to me. I think its because they can't truely remember but don't want to admit their memory has faded , so they make you think you were seeing things, lol. Glad you have found the plant and worth it too.

That was a lovely story Hywel. I can almost feel the excitement you felt when it was identified for you. Is it Japanese? It sounds like it. I love airy plants like that, which allow a view right through them. Does it stand up to winds?
Thanks for a lovely story.

11 Jan, 2010

Sixpence it happens to us all as we get older (forgetting things)

11 Jan, 2010

Mad I'm not sure where it originates from. It would be interesting to find out. It stands up quite well to the wind. I didn't have to tie it up last year at all.

Sixpence I don't think my dad was interested enough in the garden to even know it was there lol. But he did have a way of making me doubt myself. In the end I used to tell him to be quiet ( or words to that effect. lol )

Muddywalters. I don't think my dad got the plant from anywhere. I think it was there when he bought the house like all the other things he killed off.

Thanks everyone for your comments. :o))

11 Jan, 2010

Lol Hywel well when you start to doubt yourself you know then its not you but them as a profesional once told me.

11 Jan, 2010

I got wise to it in the end but by then self-doubt had become a bad habit. I still do it lol.

11 Jan, 2010

Lol more confidence in your self Hywel is what you need.

11 Jan, 2010

Yes Hywel I bought my seed from Thompson and Morgan three years ago, when I opened them there were two packets in the envelope so sent other packet to a friend, remember they germinated and I potted them up they grew a bit then seemed to die off thought I'd lost them but saved the pots, the next year they sprouted again, planted them out, and this year they flowered for the first time, love them they remind me of furry caterpillars :-)

11 Jan, 2010

I'm glad you didn't throw them away. You would have lost them. The white ones are much smaller than the pink ones.

11 Jan, 2010

13 Jan, 2010

13 Jan, 2010

lovely story hywell
reminds me of my dad when he would try to interest me in gardening.
he would show me how to dig in lupuns for conditioning the soil.
he had a whole 1000 sq meters for the garden so we never had to buy much in the way of vegies.
however my interests were in engineering then not gardens but the litle education he gave me stuck.

14 Jan, 2010

A heartwarming blog and with such a happy ending, especially as you have shared them with others and spread the joy of them.
