**THE BEAST HAS FINALLY ARRIVED**

We have snow, sigh! we must be the last people in the UK….not that I want it, I can assure you….

This last week has been exceptionally cold with temperatures dropping to minus 6 and 7 you may think, well thats not too bad… it is here in the South, it is unthinkable, we could have stayed in the Midlands if we had wanted those kind of temperatures!

Have been trying to keep our two tiny ponds, birdbaths etc free from ice, a full time job, because within half an hour they were frozen over again, never ever had this in the South before……but so important that our feathered friends have clean water and of course food!

We have two resident robins, a wren, and a blackbird, today we had a visiting Mistle Thrush and a Great Spotted Woodpecker, several mad starlings, the usual magpies pigeons and collared doves and goldfinch….lovely to sit in the conservatory and watch the wildlife…

As I type the garden is gradually disappearing under a blanket of snow, and because of the frozen ground it is not going anywhere else soon! several of our border line hardy plants look the worse for wear, the smaller plants can be replaced, but larger shrubs will be a different matter, we have never experienced frozen ground this long before, snow yes! disappointing to say the least!

I hope you are all managing to cope with this horrid weather, take care when you out and about, with a lot of luck it could be all over soon….
A cheerful photograph some hot cross buns without the crosses and a spicy fruit loaf, homemade of course with the help of our trusty bread maker ………enjoy and keep warm…..Dotty.

1 Mar, 2018

Yes, pretty awful, I agree. Many say it's 'pretty' :)

1 Mar, 2018

I can smell those buns from here. Do we need to rethink those tender plants!

1 Mar, 2018

Yes it is awful here also DD.All my garden was newly planted last year,so I have everything crossed,Your buns do look yum,I bet you did enjoy them,Keep safe and warm.

Ooh, yeah..like the look of those buns! Sorry it has hit you Angela. Its just dire here....so unpleasant. I shan't be crossing the threshold unless I really really have to! And this is set to continue until the weekend at least. Its worse today than yesterday. Scott has cleared the drive twice, and its covered again. I don't know why he is bothering...think he's just cabin fevered.

Karen it is extremely unpleasant I hate being cold, and this
weather makes me so hungry!! I shall be the size of a house by the time this cold snap is over!!
Callie I really hope your garden survives, I know how you feel! anxious times....
Siris nothing can beat the smell of freshly baked buns.... we shall have to wait and see how things go after this cold snap, never had a problem in the past with the snow,(2011- 2013) but it was the freezing cold winds that have done the damage this time, the ground has been frozen solid.

1 Mar, 2018

Yes, I agree. The winds are the worst of it. We just looked outside and it was coming across us...still horizontal...very heavy. Heaviest so far. Lord knows what we get up to tomorrow. I have yet to see any snow falling 'downwards'.

1 Mar, 2018

Oh dear Karen, I feel for you, not a good start to the year is it? it can only get better lol!!

1 Mar, 2018

Indeed! Last autumn I just knew it was going to be this kind of a winter. Remember....we had no summer at all. I could sense it coming. I'm hopeful that this year we will have a summer as it will be all 'chilled out' ! lol!

It is pretty grim isn't it... In one way we are quite lucky to be able to stay inside and watch from the warmth. When I think of the younger ones trying to get to work especially those in caring jobs like my daughter, where others rely on them, I worry how they are coping. Communities pull together at times like this, our local men were out yesterday clearing paths and walkways. My cottage is on a hill and they cleared all the path down to the main road. The village has been cut off today, a lorry jackknifed on the road leading to the main town.
Lottie loves the snow and we have been walking and then back home with the log burner on, pets all snug, bird feeders swinging with birds...so many sparrows! The only shrubs I am really bothered about are my two Pieris. I knocked the snow from them then wished I'd left it as they are open now to the biting winds..
After all that Dd, I want to say those sticky buns look so tasty!!

Oh wow, mouth watering and scrumpy, just what is needed on these cold days. Dotty, I feel for you, we of course expect frozen ground so we work around it but not expected for you, your poor plants.

2 Mar, 2018

Dotty, we had no heavy snow overnight, despite the forecast, but the heavy frost has turned the paths and patio into an ice-rink! OH has banned me from stepping outside today, unless the temps rise and a thaw begins.

How is it with you today?

2 Mar, 2018

Shirley..last night it started to thaw...then froze!!.it has snowed this afternoon...not much..but it is still bitingly cold....and dangerous....your O H is right....stay in!!

2 Mar, 2018

We’ve been watching the news and all the poor people stuck on motorways all night, if you don’t have to go out don’t. It’s snowing again here now light but swirling around.

2 Mar, 2018

Cabin fever was setting in ... but this morning looks to be a better day ahead as green grass and not snow can be seen! Temp. could reach 6 degrees by midday ... I hope so!

3 Mar, 2018

Shirley so much better, raining now but not as cold thank goodness!
Dawn have been out and had a quick look this morning, some things have bounced back others look a tad sick!
Janey I am so glad we don't have to go out in it, and feel sorry for those that do......the buns went in no time!
Karen you did say you thought it was going to be a bad winter.......let us hope it is all behind us now!

3 Mar, 2018

Same here Dotty ... to the point you wouldn't know it had snowed at all!

3 Mar, 2018

Thats right Shirley.....nothing left thank heavens!!

3 Mar, 2018

:o)))

4 Mar, 2018

I hope everything springs back to life.
What a week it was, raining here now, so pleased to see the rain.

4 Mar, 2018

The only snow left here is around the edges of the fields where it drifted. We do have an ice sculpture still melting on the lawn from the inside of the water bucket that catches the drips from the greenhouse when it rains. Our goldfish is still alive..... nice that you are taking such great care of your birds and fish. I can remember in the sixties when we lived on the Isle of Wight, they had so much snow that the buses came to a halt and the drifts on the road were awful.

7 Mar, 2018

We have forecasted snow again in the morning :-( hopefully turning to rain.

7 Mar, 2018

Oh no Dawn..... what a pain!

7 Mar, 2018

We have rain today.

8 Mar, 2018

Ours was rain in the end too.

8 Mar, 2018

Glad to hear that Dawn.....

9 Mar, 2018

I hope the weather perks up for you, Dotty...
The month of May will hopefully bring warmth and sunshine !
