Fruity Things

Now that Digger is getting into flowery things, I thought I’d better redress the balance with some edibles in my garden.

I inherited two apple trees in the back garden which are still cropping reasonably well (although one of them has got into an on-year/off-year pattern)

I planted two pear trees against the back fence and trained them as espaliers. It was nineteen years before they started to produce fruit!

There are two rows of late-fruiting raspberries – enough to provide some every day just now

And the blackberries are ripening nicely as well

Tomatoes are fruit too. The last two years, they went down with blight but this year have produced a good crop, starting in mid August

Finally, grown as an ornamental, this is Cape gooseberry.

Fruit salad anyone? Bring the clotted cream.

Pear trees - these take several years before they start to bear fruit (usually reckon about ten years) hence the saying, 'Plant pears for your heirs. ' So the longer mine went without fruiting, the more inclined I was to leave them rather than plant new ones and wait another ten years. And you need two different varieties, that flower at the same time, to get any fruit (like apples).
The Cape gooseberry has a very sweet taste (which I don't like) so they are just for ornament

Gilli - I grew up in Devon so we had clotted cream every weekend - mmmmm

I like to grow fruit - more than vegetables. You have some nice looking ones.
