Visit to Minterne Gardens, Minterne Magna

On Thursday and Friday of this week, OH and I moseyed down country Dorset way. While on the road, we stopped at these gardens. The Manor House is right next door to a charming little church and there is a convenient little car park opposite the gates.
We wandered through the woodland gardens for well over 2 hours and, tho a little unkempt, this place had a charm all of its own.

The Manor House was so typical of its architect, even I guessed it was Lutyens.

The beginning of the woodland walk..delightful blossom!

This tree was covered in moss!

The place was almost deserted; we were greeted by an honesty box and only saw 3 couples during our time there. We had the most relaxing and peaceful walk.

Just down the road, we just had to visit the Cerne Giant at Cerne Abbas.
Then at about 1pm, we left to make our way to Bournemouth and Compton Acres which was our next port of call.

What lovely gardens, a hidden gem I think, you took some beautiful photos. The buildings look stunning and I just loved the woodland areas.

What a wonderful place to find! A delight. Did you climb up and 'tickle' the giant, as folklore says!!! Lol.

Thanks Cinders, it was truly peaceful!
Sticki/Grandmage it was like going back in time, that we werent real, just ghosts on the landscape of time. And no! lol...by the time we finished at Minterne, didnt have the energy to scratch our ears!!
Thanks Grannyb, it was in need of a little tlc, but not too much..

There is a garden in Scotland rather like this but with no manor house nearby, I know the feeling of things long ago - it's lovely.

Tet - you've made my day!! What a wonderful walk - I love that "pinkish" tree (Liquidambar possibly?), and those gorgeous white bracts on the Cornus: what a find. And to think I used to live in Dorset but never knew about it (as a teenager I worked at Compton Acres, in the ticket booth).

Beautiful photos - thank you! Hope you enjoyed the rest of your weekend . . .

Thanks Helen, nice to meet you.
Sticki, I thought you might understand..its almost a prickly feeling on the back of your neck isnt it...and you can almost hear and see people..but not quite!
Sheilabub...what are you like!!!! I had read about this garden years ago and almost forgotten it. We found it on the map (cos I wanted to see the Cerne Giant) and decided to give it a go. We found another one like this on Friday, and will post a blog later. Fancy you having a great job like that...bet you took our money when we went there 30 years ago!!

A wonderful place,Tet..and so enjoyed the walk round with you..that Acer is superb..as are all the other areas..I don't really know Dorset very well, only one or two of the obvious places..but this is a lovely part of it..thanks for sharing..:o)

Its a real "time warp" place Bloomer, so much so, when you re-enter "civilisation" its quite a culture shock!
There are lots of places like this in the South West..it really is worth spending a week or two "down south". A very different feel to Yorkshire (which I really love by the way), and like Richmond and Leyburn, there are lovely old market towns, Stockbridge being one of them (not far from Salisbury). One of my favourite little towns up north is Middleham.

How lovely to find a place like that and be able to explore without falling over crowds of people especially when taking ones photo`s, they are great shots Tetra, thankyou for sharing...

My family lived near Poole Harbour, Tet, and we spent most weekends on the beach! So didn't explore much inland (as I would today). Left home at 23, and explored Switzerland instead! 30 years ago, ha ha, you flatterer you . . . more like 50 years ago. :))

Superb photos Tet. I enjoyed them all! What a wonderful house and gardens....it looks a lovely place for a wander. I've always fancied a Eucryphia...aren't they wonderful at this time of year? In my old garden I had a Hoheria Sextylosa, which is similar in that it is evergreen and gives a huge display of white blossoms in the mid-late summer time. I often wonder whether it survived this last winter!

Looks a very lovely peacefull place to be.

Well you certainly didnt look that old to me when I saw you at Spritz's Sheilabub! (Hope it was you and not Shirleytulip..tend to mix you up lol..sorry).
Thanks Clarice..it WAS very peaceful.
Karen, was Eucryphia that tall slender tree with white "orange blossom" type flowers? There was no name to it, but it was gorgeous and slim enough for a small garden.
I would love it.

28 Aug, 2011

I think eucryphia is the one with the orange blossom type flowers - I have had one for 3 years - no flowers tho :-(

Yet another treasure found in Dorset ... a County full of them I think! ... Some lovely pics which I've really enjoyed viewing ... thanks for sharing them, Tet ... Btw, if I had a pound for every time I've been called Sheila, I'd be living in luxury ... lol! :o)))

28 Aug, 2011

Your photos are amazing and lovely blog:)

28 Aug, 2011

It was ME you saw at Spritz's, Tet!! Thanks for the compliment - maybe I should change my avatar (Sticki thought that might be a good idea, lol).

Shirley - we'll just have to live with the confusion!

28 Aug, 2011

Do you get called Shirley very often, Sheila? ... You know, appointments in doctors, dentists etc.? ... :o(((

28 Aug, 2011

Sticki thought Sheila looked younger in real life than the avatar photo.

28 Aug, 2011

Only occasionally, Shirley!

Right Sticki . . . now all I have to do is find a photo from ten years ago?! lol.

28 Aug, 2011

You don't need to Sheila!

Makes you think tho - if only I knew how to use photoshop I could air brush myself! I could be stripey, have animal ears and hair like a gentian!!

28 Aug, 2011

Now that would be an interesting avatar, Sticki ! ... :o)))))

28 Aug, 2011

Oh yes Stick! Airbrushing I could live with, especially from the neck down LOL!
Thanks again Nana d. Im glad you enjoyed it.
Phew! I was right thank goodness..after all, I only saw you briefly Sheilabub..if that photo is you it does NOT do you justice! You dont get a £1 this time around Shirleyt..but I wont guarantee it in the future lol!

28 Aug, 2011

28 Aug, 2011

you have seen some lovely places this year Tetra, lovely pics ;o)

29 Aug, 2011

San, when I see all the lovely pics on here I get quite sniffly..the UK is a wonderful place, as are other places in this world. I think we should pass an international law that all children be brought up to be gardeners..THAT should improve our planet!

29 Aug, 2011

Good idea Tet. :))

30 Aug, 2011

Another charming place, you do get around, thankfully!! it saves me from going lol

30 Sep, 2011

Aw for shame DD! Its only at the other end of the A35! lol!

1 Oct, 2011

Just read your blog again, Tet, and you're so right about all the lovely places to visit in the UK - especially Dorset. P'raps we'd be more adventurous if we could count on sunny weather!

I shall now Google Minterne Gardens, and hope to visit next Spring . . . but will the Cornus be flowering? Was that a Cornus after the bridge pic? - amazing, gorgeous shrub!

1 Oct, 2011

Im not too sure now Sheila, I have a feeling tho that it was an hydrangea.

1 Oct, 2011

Ah. Well, it's certainly a lovely one . . . (shame, I've just taken a book on Hyrdrangeas back to the library :(
