Still looking like summer!

Do you remember my new bed? I hope you’re not tired of hearing about it – because here I go again…

Just to remind you – I started making it in June this year in this area of lawn. I even did some planning before I began the planting! I chose a colour scheme of white, cream, burgundy and lime green. I have been really pleased with the way the plants have grown and flowered. In fact, in mid-October, it still looks like a summer flower bed! Come and take a look at some of the flowers in it.

Corydalis ochraleuca

I grew several of these plants from seedlings that I dug up from around the parent plant – some of you have one of them! I hope yours are doing well, too.

Dianthus ‘Cranberry Ice’

I bought these as plug-plants back in the spring, and grew them on. They’ve been a great buy, flowering all the time from early June onwards.

Geranium ‘Coombland White’

Well you wouldn’t expect me not to have a geranium in the bed, now would you? This one is a ‘mingler’ – just how I like them!

Anthemis tinctoria ‘Sauce Hollandaise’

OK – I admit it! Yes, I’ve made mistakes in the planting – I put in three Anthemis – they were tiny plants – and my! how they’ve spread! I shall have to take one out when they’ve finished flowering.

Angelonia ‘Serena’

Do you know these pretty annuals? Again, I bought them as plugs and grew them on – but I’ve found a source of seeds, so I’m going to try growing my own next year.

Clematis viticella ‘Alba Luxurians’

On the obelisk, there are two Clematis and a climbing rose. The C. viticella has an amazingly long flowering period! It’s beginning to look a bit ‘tatty’ now, but there are still buds there. The second Clematis hasn’t flowered this time round – but the rose certainly has!

Rosa ‘Lady Hillingdon’

I have been trying various Coreopsis this year – there seem to be new cultivars around that are supposed to be hardy! I’ll believe that when I see this beauty reappear next year! Even in a mild area like this, I don’t find many Coreopsis to be reliably hardy.

Coreopsis ‘Jive’

Cosmos atrosanguineus

I know that this gorgeous plant isn’t hardy – unless we’re lucky enough to get a mild winter, that is!

Gaura lindheimeri

The white Gaura has done really well here – just like a cloud of tiny butterflies!

Tanacetum parthenium

Yes, it’s Feverfew! I like it – and it flowers and flowers if it’s dead-headed.

Echinacea ‘White Swan’

I planted three Echinacea ‘White Swan’ and they’re still going strong, too, long after the pink ones in another bed have gone over.

Gerbera ‘Everlast White’

Only one Gerbera – it was an impulse buy – not in my plan at all! As my pink ones came through last winter, this one should be all right as well.

Penstemon ‘Eleanor Young’

I did plan to put some dark coloured Penstemons in, though – and they have all flowered really well. This is their second round of flowers, after dead-heading. The last ones will be left on the plants now, as winter protection.

Persicaria microcephala ‘Red Dragon’

My second mistake was in planting too many of these great plants – I didn’t realise that the bed would prove to be ideal for them – and they’ve sent out long stems – too long! I shall be moving at least one elsewhere.

Scabiosa atropurpurea ‘Chilli Black’

I lost this one last winter in another bed – but I’ve given it another try!

Parahebe carractiae ‘Snow Clouds’

Oh, what a beauty this plant is! I love it! Low-growing, evergreen and small white flowers. Just beautiful!

Diascia

I had three white Diascia elsewhere in the garden last year, and as they survived the winter, they got moved to the edge of this bed – where they have thrived!

Salvia x jamensis ‘Skylights Primrose’

Salvias grow well in my garden. I didn’t plan to include this, either, but I saw it at an Open Garden and was lucky enough to find it while I still had space for it.

Rosa ‘Champagne Moment’

But my favourite plants in the whole flower bed have to be this beautiful rose – on its second set of flowers -

Scabiosa ‘Barocca’

And the best of all the good performers – Scabiosa ‘Barocca’. It looks as good now as it did when it first went into the flowerbed in June. So many flowers!

I do hope you have enjoyed looking at my summer flower-bed! I’m certainly enjoying the colour and fragrance and hope it lasts even longer. Autumn? Not in this bed yet!

11 Oct, 2009

Good choice of plants :o)

11 Oct, 2009

You've certainly had a long season of flowers from those plants sprtiz. Well done.
I've found coreopsis hardy in full sun and well-drained soil (even came through last winter) but lose them otherwise. I've never had much luck with scabious (I don't think they like my acid soil)

Beautiful. Your blogs are fantastic for me as although I know and have grown many of the plants you have listed you keep on introducing me to many other new ones which I intend growing. Thanks

11 Oct, 2009

Thanks for the kind comments...I appreciate them!

Andrew - I have several Coreopsis in this bed, and it's in full sun, so perhaps they will survive. I do hope so! The new Scabious is a joy...

Pipsqueak - it happens to me, too! I'm glad you find the blogs helpful. :-)

What a wonderful collection of plants some of which I have never seen before. They are so beautiful, all of them. The Coreopsis 'Jive' is one I have never seen and I bet I wouldn't find it in a garden centre. Maybe I could grow it from seed do you think? What a wonderful variety of flowers you have. That lovely white geranium too, never seen that one ... Oh I could go on.

12 Oct, 2009

Particularly like the Scabious and the Corydalis

12 Oct, 2009

Mad - I got that Coreopsis as a plug-plant - they may be available again next spring.

Have you got the Corydalis, Bamboo? I could probably send you one in the spring, all being well!

12 Oct, 2009

lots of beautys there barbara, bet your so proud of yourself its all turned out as planned, i was expecting an overall view of the bed at the end,, if you get chance would you put a pic up :o))

12 Oct, 2009

As it is now, do you mean, Sandra? It's too dark now - but I'll try tomorrow and add it. :-)

12 Oct, 2009

What a lot of beauty in one small area. Thank you so much for this blog, it really inspires.

12 Oct, 2009

How do you do it??? Just amazing in such a short time :-)
I particularly love your White Gaura.

12 Oct, 2009

Terrible isn't it Dawn. I'm so green with envy I could hide in one of her borders without being noticed. Ah! just thought, I would probably be pulled up as a weed and confined to the compost bin where I would frighten the Slow-worms and Woodlice.

12 Oct, 2009

thanx barbara, yes to see how it is now would be lovely :o))

12 Oct, 2009

It isn't easy, Sandra - it's such a large bed...but I'll try. :-))

No you couldn't, Toto! Henry would find you! Thanks for the nice comments, though!

Dunno, Dawn - hard work, I suppose! TLC as well.

12 Oct, 2009

Gorgeous Spritz...thanks for showing us round. A lot of those flowers I've never seen before... & love the Cosmos & the Scabiosa especially. This bed must be very comforting for you in the run up to winter!

12 Oct, 2009

Toto: Perish the thought of you ending up in the compost bin and I agree Spritz's skill, hard work and commitment is unbelievable, quite amazing.

12 Oct, 2009

Thank you kindly!!!

Yes, Fluff - it really is! :-))

12 Oct, 2009

No, I don't have that corydalis, Spritz and it'd be great to have a seedling.
I'm going to echo Sanbaz here and say I'd like to see a pic of the whole area too!

12 Oct, 2009

Lovely blog Spritz and such gorgeous flowers, Carol and I are busy writing down all the names of the ones we want next year. Lol
I think we are going to 'lose' a bit more lawn ! :~)))))

12 Oct, 2009

I wouldn't mind being found by Henry. I have a feeling that he and I would get on famously. It takes one dumb animal to really appreciate another. Sorry, perhaps I shouldn't infer that Henry is dumb.

13 Oct, 2009

He's certainly not 'dumb', Toto - he communicates very well! You'd probably get on really well with each other...one 'treat' and he's anyone's...LOL.

Ian - You do know that the bed is over 20' long? Have you got that much lawn left after the last dig-up session?? lol.

13 Oct, 2009

Lol Spritz, no unfortunately we don't, Holly might have something to say about not having anywhere to play. :~((

13 Oct, 2009

Never tire of seeing your lovely garden on here - whichever part you are 'showcasing' at the time.

13 Oct, 2009

Thanks - I'm going to write a blog now as people have asked to see the whole bed. :-))

13 Oct, 2009

Goodie, goodie - lots of photos please!

13 Oct, 2009

Nice one Spritz - I'm looking forward to seeing the clematis/rose growing up the obelisk :-)

13 Oct, 2009

I've done it! You will have to peer to see what's on the obelisk, though....

13 Oct, 2009

OK, I'll pop over now.

13 Oct, 2009

Gorgeous! The angelonia is really pretty but I've fallen in love with the Gaura!! Amazing!
The whole lot are lovely though!

13 Oct, 2009

Beautiful garden!! Makes me wish I could stick to a color scheme but I just can't do it =P

14 Oct, 2009

I'm with you on that one, Floralhead - except I never put bright pink and bright yellow together - absolutely hideous combination, but otherwise, mix and match is what happens.

14 Oct, 2009

me to bamboo, i dont even think about colour mixes exept like you say certain ones just wont go :o)

14 Oct, 2009

A wonderful display of colour but where are they, did you dig up your lawn?

14 Oct, 2009

Wonderful selection of plants, all my favourites in one bed. Your bed is nearly as big as our garden lol.

17 Oct, 2009

The lime green being our envy at your gorgeous success?! Made a reference list of your great combinations (the good & the warnings!), and noted mingler Coombland White geranium. Don't know if I've seen white salvia. Much prefer to water flowers than lawn! Bravo!

17 Oct, 2009

The more I look at this, the more I want them ALL! I think Moongrower is right! My name is Marie and I am a plantaholic!

17 Oct, 2009

Marie - join the club! LOL.

Yes, Heron - I DID dig part of the lawn up! I've written a new blog to show the whole bed as it is now - and I wrote a blog when it was under construction, back in June,

Orgratis, the lime green plants are there - honestly!

Sorbus sorbaria 'Sem' - new growth,
Alchemilla mollis
Artemisia 'Oriental Limelight'...
and last but not least, Clematis viticella 'Alba Luxurians' has white flowers with pale green stripes!!

Thanks for the compliment. :-))

17 Oct, 2009

Thanks Barbara! I didnt realise just how bad it could get!! I just unearthed a pile of Ground Force mags from years ago, so it may have been lurking unnoticed for quite a while now! :~}

17 Oct, 2009

I love your white flowers. They are my favourite colour because they really stand out in the borders in the evening, when i come home from work. Just gorgeous.

17 Oct, 2009

Thanks for the tour round your bed and it's very useful to get info on the do-ers and the slackers!

18 Oct, 2009

And I am helpless before beauty. Lord, grant me the courage to root out the thugs when I see them, the serenity to accept the cuttings of friends, and the wisdom to know the difference!

18 Oct, 2009

Oh Orgratis - what can I say to that? Just - amazing!

Love that phrase, K'smum!

18 Oct, 2009

Lol

18 Oct, 2009

Brilliant, Orgratis!! :~))
Can I steal, em...... borrow it please??

18 Oct, 2009

I shall use it, Marie - why not??

19 Oct, 2009

Gratis: freely sharing! Unlike other additions, ours is healthy and enhances the lives of those around us, including the four leggeds and winged ones! Let's keep growing!

19 Oct, 2009

Well, I shall, anyway! :-))

19 Oct, 2009

Thank you!
