I've been given circular paving stones to lay in my garden - where can I find out how to lay them to make a stepping stone path?
I've added a photo now - do I mark round each stone lift and digout add sand and then replace next?

Go to the bottom of the page and click onto 'P' for Path Ideas. When you see Dottydaisy's photo click onto it. You could then send her a Private Message to ask how she did it.

If it's across the lawn, place out the stones at a reasonable step length, staggered, cut round them with an old sharp knife, lift the first stone, cut and dig out the turf or soil in the ring, take it down to the level you require the stones to be set at, make sure the ground underneath is firm (will not sink), put back the stone and continue to the next one. It pays to pace the stones out then go upstairs and look out to see if that is where you prefer to have them.

in grass you put the round slab on the grass.cut round it with say an old bread knife.lift out the grass you cut and soil so you steps are just below the grass so as not to interupt your mowing.space them bye putting a hose down in an interesting shape wear you want it as i find strate boaring but you can.then take some little sticks walk a normal pace everywear you put your foot put a stick then put the stones there.hope ive helped bye bye

I have had a look were Mad said, and it is good for idea's but you want to know how to lay them. on the lawn. Place them on the lawn were you want them, cut around the first one with a big knife, remove the stone and cut another circle about an inch or more inside the other, lift out the turf, this marks out were you need to work, move on and do the rest, now you can remove the turf with a spade, the idea is to go deep enough to have the paving level with the lawn with a couple of inches of sand under them, you will have to walk on them for a while adding a bit of sand untill they settle in. hope this helps,

Thanks Maggie - I've asked about this for you and will let you know if I get an answer - it may depend on where you live of course as to what's available in your area.

ow i thaught you were putting them in grass clematis but dont worry you have done them wright.there is no need for cement as there heavy enough to not go anywear as long as the soil is well trodden down underneath them as it seams to be in your picture.
as for maggie i think most large garden centres would have these kind of stepping stones but its worth phoning round to save yourself a journy.
