Hi folks,

Just to mention before the plant list, if you’re going to Chelsea on Wednesday, say ‘Hi’ if you spot us (more at the bottom).

This week’s featured garden (Henstead Exotic Garden) was an exotic garden which the owner described as being a bit ‘Jurassic Park’ with plants towering in to the sky.

At buryfields, Toby talked about creating a tropical, jungle effect with:
Trachycarpus fortunei (Chusan palm)
Phormium tenax (New Zealan flax)

The plants described at Henstead:
Ensete ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ (Ethiopian Black Banana)
Ricinus communis red leaved variety (Castor oil plant)
Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana
Arundo donax (Great Spanish reed)

Toby and Joe were planting up veggies in the Dig In garden, they had some of the free Dig In seeds and also some more unusual varieties:
Dwarf French bean ‘Purple TeePee’
Globe artichoke ‘Romanesco’
Dwarf French bean ’Maxi

Carol’s five minute enthuse this week was all about Euphorbias, including one which was suitable for smaller gardens:
Euphorbia palustris (Marsh spurge)
Euphorbia mellifera (Honey spurge)
Euphorbia polychroma (Many-coloured spurge) – this was the smaller one

Back at Buryfields Toby also planted some more plants in his exotic garden, including a Euphorbia :
Euphorbia x pasteurii
Salvia greggii (Autumn sage)
Ipomoea ‘Blackie’
Geranium maderense (Giant herb robert)
Geranium palmatum (Canary Island geranium)
Geranium yeoi (aka ‘rubescens’) (Greater herb robert)

This week Toby also started his comparison beds, mini versions of the trials fields at RHS Wisley (which I think are really worth a visit). He’ll be adding plants to it but this week added:
Digitalis purpurea Foxy group (Foxglove)
Digitalis parviflora
Digitalis x mertonensis (Strawberry foxglove)

Heuchera ‘Plum pudding’

Toby Also added new plants, some which are available for the first time this year:
Heuchera ‘Tiramisu’
Digitalis ‘Plum pudding’ ‘Goldcrest’

And one which isn’t available until next year:
Digitalis ‘Serendipity’

No Gardener’s World next week as there’ll be coverage of Chelsea Flower Show in its place, the coverage actually starts on the BBC at 6pm on Sunday.

If any of you are off to Chelsea this year, have a fantastic time – and if any of you are there on Wednesday 20th, keep your eyes open for Ajay and me as we’ll be visiting with camera in hand.

If anyone does spot us, please do come and say hi – we’d really love to meet any GoY members. In fact, if you do come and say hi we’ll buy you a drink :o) – is Pimms de rigeur at Chelsea?

Have a great weekend and hopefully see you on Wednesday :o)

In Wales we have to wait until Saturday night for Gardener's world. Thanks for the preview Peter.
I'm going to look forward to Carol's talk about Euphorbias - I have a smaller garden now and am always on the look out for suitable plants.

Have fun at Chelsea.
I nearly bought a Heuchera 'Tiramisu' at Malvern the other week. Changed my mind at the last minute and bought 'Ginger Ale' instead.

I will have to wait for Hampton court. Look forward to seeing your pics.

I will be there on wednesday Peter, wear a GoY badge or green ribbon and I will come and say hello. Yes everyone does drink Pimms but at £5 a glass you might not want too many of us turning up!

Well, I was all set to fly down for a day Chelsea visit, but had to cancel due to work commitments (Boo Hoo!). Pimms? I'd have wanted the champagne and strawbs, myself!, haha!

Heucheras must be one of our faves at the mo - why are they named after such delicious food/confectionary?

Have a gr8 time! look forward to the pics! And, wear the GOY shirts! :-)

17 May, 2009

I'll check it out Arlene, looks like a weekend so if we're free I'll pop down.

Mageth, we'll be in GoY t-shirts (navy blue polo shirt with the GoY logo on) our tickets are from 3:30 so you don't need to inspect people 'til then :o)

Champagne and strawberries! Arriving in your helicopter too? :o) We'll bring back plenty of pictures and will be on the look out for chocolate & sweet ideas too.
