California

As the end of the summer careers towards me I thought I would share with you the photos I took of gardens and plants whilst I was on holiday in California. We spent two weeks on a ‘road trip’ and so saw lots of different bits and climates of California.

The Shakespeare Garden in the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco (Shakespeare Gardens seem very popular in the US)

Sedums growing at the roadside

Gorgeous colours!

The gardens at the Mission in San Luis Obispo – very peaceful.

Somewhere in this photo of Agapanthus – which grew all over the place – is a tiny hummingbird. Honest! It’s there somewhere, but even I can’t spot it now, and I took the photo!

In San Diego – a house with a stunning front garden of sedums, agave, aloe and cactus.

That’s a cactus growing wild – in places there were thousands of them.

Chola cactus – many of these are as tall as people. And they have funny alien-looking yellow flowers too!

Joshua Trees.

A huge cactus just – growing in the soil!

A cactus garden – oh don’t you wish!!!

Of course, being away for quite a bit of the early summer did fairly disastrous things to my own garden….. Rain, clay soil and too many plants meant that some things grew very leggy and fell over, other things got swamped, and I ended up having to dig out the entire sun bed and replant it.

And not with cacti either!!!

Oh I loved this blog ... all those cacti - it must have been wonderful to have seen them in their native habitat:o)

Thank you Hywel - seeming them growing wild in the desert was extraordinary, in some very inhospitable looking landscape too. But because of the climate in Southern California lots of people had aloes and agaves in their gardens too, and cacti too!

Love the blog - I'm due to go on an adventure / drive from New York to Orlando via the Blue Ridge Mountains/ Shannondoah National park starting next Sunday from Heathrow. I'll have to have my camera at the ready to capture gardens in that area and compare how much they change over the 1000 miles.
