my mums rill and water feature redone

a while ago perhaps 10 years I made my mum a pond with a rill going down one side for the dog and birds to wash and drink from next to the kitchen .this failed and the water ran behind the render and the pond kept seemingly leaking . her filter is in the garage with the lime green brick wall . when I built it there was a lovely Montana growing at the back which I left room for as it seamed nice and complementary . I took all the rocks off of her rill (stream) to rerender it and make the sides higher . I discovered doing this that the Montana had put roots all the way under the pond liner and up the side hence the leek . ive had to kill this plant to stop it hapning again . I got a water but and updated her filter and a new pump and made what I call brick man to look like hes spitting water and put all the natural stone back higher . there is know more leek and I love it but im biast . hope you enjoy .

theres still more to do but you get the idea I hope .

That's really good. I bet your mum's pleased to have it working again. It's just the right height for your dogs.

I love Brick Man! :)) where does the water come from Leigh? Is it an indoor tap, or a pump?

Really like the brick man - you are so clever. And the pooch enjoys it too!

my mum is pleased . the water is pumped into the room behind brick man and runs out of an adapted water but back threw the wall vier pipes I plummed in onto the rill . brick man just hides the pipes really . thank you so much everyone . I actually hated school but was given this artist gift that ive worked on seriousl since the early 90`s snoop . I wanted to be a tattooist which I was quite good at including tattooing myself . I went to evening classes and got inspiration for drawing . then a friend told me about a pottery class so I went and I used too do huge things which are expensive to fire , the cley isn't easy to get and after all the hard work the piece can explode if you leave an air bubble not to mention the electric bill . once I did some research on sand sculpture and how cement works I mixed the two building my first being the big head in my front garden . as I kept watching I found concrete sculpture and the amazing qualities concrete has . the only bad thing is it goes of quick but I guess that can be a good thing . ive always kept fish so I guess it was natural progression .

Thanks for explaining that Leigh, it's great.

Very clever you certainly have a very good talent for design ideas too, love the brick man good idea. It has made a great water feature very unique. We'll done, you are keeping yourself very busy, good to have a hobby, wish I was artistic although I am quite good with a pair of knitting needles as long as I have a pattern to follow. Lol and that keeps me busy when I am not gardening.

Fabulous, Leigh! I love the brick man, and I think all your concrete sculptures are intriguing. They give such character to your garden. I love your black wall. How did you construct that?

16 Sep, 2014

your welcome ck . I can sew and use a sewing machine but I cant knit lol as long as you keep busy we all have talents I believe . I constructed the concrete fence bye taping hoops of thick wire together . wrapping them in chicken wire . then a strong mix 2 sand to 1 cement with a consistency of that's dry enough to hold a ball shape if you squeeze it but not so dry it falls apart . support the hoops while you put the first layer of cement on squeezing it into the chicken wire . leave the wire a bit exposed for a key . dampen it the next day and smooth on the last layer of cement . if you look back at my old blogs I think there could be some pictures .

I like the dog, he was evidently "mentally involved" in your activity :-) Is it that sort of dog which was used for guarding monasteries in Tibet? Somebody close to me have this dog and they look friendly on a first sight, but in fact they are very sharp.

very sharpie infact lol its a Chinese fighting dog called zebadee and hes lovely as we don't keep aggressive dogs . I have 3 of them and an American bulldog x staffy .

Celtic Britain has close relationship with Green Man. I think you know, what I am talking about, it was popular in English gardens in 18th and 19th century. This brick face reminds me that and seeing green doors - I would probably paint him dark green, lol.

17 Sep, 2014

well I thought of that but I wanted him to look like the wall behind him like he was part of it . when it weathers in it will look much better too . ive done a green man that was on property snakes and ladders with sarah beeny in an old beaters hut in the middle of the forest . check out my old blogs .

Snoop that took me back - I was no good at knitting with needles but produced quite long ropes through a cotton reel - you couldn't do it through modern ones.

Very clever aren't you, I bet your Mum is thrilled to bits with her water feature, its unique, all the more special as its been designed and constructed by you, the dog likes it as well, I have water features, birdbaths and waterbutts that our dogs and cats drink out of, they prefer the rainwater.....
We called that French Knitting Steve, used to spend hours doing that during the winter months, lol....

Thanks for explaining that, Leigh. I am in awe of your mastery of all the techniques you use in your constructions.

You are very clever NP in many ways. The dogs and your mum appreciate your hard work to get this up and running. I love the mask to cover the piping.

looks impressive! I take it that it's mains-powered? did you have a socket already, or did you have to have one installed?

I'd love a water feature here, but it'd have to be solar powered, can't imagine the HA letting me have an external electical socket installed, and don't think that leading the cable through a window to an internal socket would be advisible, either!

27 Sep, 2014

no theres a socket in what is my mums garage fran .

27 Sep, 2014

ah, right. lol I need to get a garage as well as a mains socket, then!
