The Robbers Are Back

Sorry, not gardening, more of a warning to lock up and alarm your outbuildings.
Last December, our (what we call) top garage was broken into one night, we have metal bars with locks across the side door and up and over garage door but they cut the padlocks off and crow barred the door open. They took a stash of copper OH had been collecting for about 35 years, to take to the scrap yard one day, the day that never came and some chainsaw attachments. They used the farm lane to enter from the back, cut a hole through our hawthorn edge then went through our woodland, from which they entered a neighbour’s shed and took his welder etc. The farm had their quad motorbike taken and tools then they used the field behind to enter lots of gardens up the road.I’ve been on edge every night since and we’ve upped the security with more lights and alarms and the side door on the top garage now has another metal door on the inside.
So this Wednesday morning the lady from the farm behind us came to say thieves had cut camera cables on her drive and some how opened/unlocked her metal gates but this time they didn’t try to enter our garage phew but cut through our hedge again, through the wood, broke into the neighbour’s shed again and took a drill etc and proceeded along the road again, one person said her husband’s power tools were taken and there must have been at least 4 of them as they took so much. It seems the thieves are targeting more rural areas. We’ve never had anything like this happen before so keep secure and safe.

How awful. What a nerve - lets hope they get caught red handed asap.

oh dear. our village has a mini crime wave at least twice a year. Last one was a local lad who used the travellers visit to hide behind. We have to permanent travellers sites within a 2 mile radius. So far we haven't had a problem. I hope you stay safe.

Oh dear, how awful for you and your neighbours,Dawn..and most unsettling ...These low life scum, know no boundaries, and dare to try anything these days...I know just how you feel,as we were burgled about three years ago, whilst we were on holiday.just such an awful feeling..I do hope your extra protection will be sufficient to deter any would be thieves in the future..xx

Thanks everyone. Poor you Bloomer. It’s horrible to think these low life’s are on your property, and have cased the joint. The alarm set up now has assured me a little, i suspect gypsy related. I’m on a Facebook village community group, it’s unnerving reading what’s going on locally and I get the police crime email once a week, the phrase happy in ignorance is very apt. They don’t seem interested in plants though or tools associated with work like a spade! I know as they opened my greenhouse door. They didn’t take my Hawes watering can but took our old copper hot water tank worth about a tenner.

Most upsetting to read your blog Dawn.... There is nothing worse than that feeling of insecurity around your home..... Each day we wake up to hearing yet again about shocking events throughout the country be it robberies, stabbings, intimidation caused by unfeeling, greedy individuals. Nothing seems to shock us these days anymore, which is a sad state of affairs. This is what it has come to.
There seems to be no barrier they can't penetrate.
I do hope you and your family stay safe, Dawn.
We all have such joy from our gardens, yours especially..........hope we can all hold on to that feeling. X
.

That's worrying for you Dawn and very upsetting too. It's an awful feeling when your property has been violated :( Some people have no regard for anyone at all. I hope they catch whoever is responsible soon.
There have been several breakins in villages near here recently. Cars and vans have been seen driving around slowly with the people inside looking at houses, and even looking in through windows … very suspicious.
One lady I know had some nice Royal Doulton figures stolen. They were limited editions and rare. She is very upset. I doubt she'll ever get them back.

Oh dear, isn't this horrid for you and your neighbours, as you say nothing seems to deter them any more...our grandson had his new expensive bicycle stolen outside their flat courtyard, whilst they were inside, he had only had it a few weeks, bought so he could ride to school, apparently he was not the only one! so sad.

So sorry to hear about the robberies, its distressing especially if someone enters your home. What's the world coming to ......!

12 Nov, 2018

I was so sorry to read about these robberies and what a worry for you and your neighbours. It is so troubling for all of us and our inability to do anything to stop it is very frustrating.

I'm so sorry Dawn ,I get so angry when I hear of these things more so now police are asking people who've been robbed to search for their own property on Ebay because they haven't the time to deal with it , I read of one case where the owners of a bike did track their bike down on Ebay they informed the police but even then they weren't allowed to take it or claim it back as they didn't have any proof ...

12 Nov, 2018

Gosh Amy, how frustrating was that...

12 Nov, 2018

You have my sympathy, Dawn.
Rural crime seems to be on the increase around here as well. Workmen are having their vans and garages broken into and their tools stolen. I sometimes think we should bring back the stocks!
When our son worked in Bahrain he said he could leave his car unlocked and valuable cameras left exposed inside. They were safe because the punishment was so extreme!
Is it my imagination or are all the cards stacked nicely to the culprits' advantage these days?

12 Nov, 2018

I certainly agree with the stocks, Eirlys.... Humiliation and deprivation may seem extreme, but of course that will never happen because of the need for rehabilitation.

You've all been kind I do feel like my peace of mind has gone.
I noticed yesterday the electric fence on the boundary, the other side of the brook was cut and OH found one of our pallets was in the brook, used as a bridge, this is another corner of the woodland, they've used our garden as a cut through.
It sounds like it's happening everywhere.
The police just don't have the resources and the thieves know it. Our local small shops/post offices have been broken into, cars are going too, the expensive key less ones are vulnerable as the theives have devices to open them. Houses are being broken in to to get car keys around here too, we have the burglar alarm on downstairs at night now, sorry to hear of your experiences too.

Not allowed to say what I really feel, it seems to be happening all over the place, you do have my sympathy though Dawn, trouble is we are in the wrong if we try to protect ourselves and our property aren't we, whole system is geared these days to protect and help the criminals....

12 Nov, 2018

Hi Sue, I know it's really frustrating, the theives know they can get away with it, a house in the next village were broken in to and the theives are on camera but had hoods up, the people had dogs so they just let them out, again we can't have guard dogs these days and they had had a little party and 11 people including children were asleep upstairs, stole wallets and phones and car keys and took so cars. I used to be happy in ignorance.

13 Nov, 2018

That's a frightening story. How awful to be robbed of your 'peace of mind'. Who's next? I'm glad nobody was hurt. I'm seriously thinking of purchasing a gun to keep by my bed.

Bathgate, in the UK the law is on the side of the thieves if you harm them when trespassing on your property, I know, crazy.

13 Nov, 2018

Wow! What about protecting your life, home & family? Is that illegal?

13 Nov, 2018

Pretty much, yes. In the UK, the chances are if you shot a burglar in your home you would be arrested and prosecuted.

13 Nov, 2018

wow!

Dawn we went back to our old home 'The Hollies' last week to pick up our trailer we didn't bring it with us at the time but left it in safe keeping in a barn in the field next door with the owners permission , The trailer had been vandalized the jockey wheel was gone the tarpaulin covering it the electric board with its light fittings plus the number plate , it wasn't worth bringing back it would cost nearly as much putting it back together ,'they' would have had to pass through two sets of farm gates also a bungalow with security with cctv 'they' must have gone over the hedge in the lane ...we reported it as we were worried the number plate could be used in a robbery or caught speeding ...

15 Nov, 2018

Hi Amy. That is sad, what a shame, the trouble and risk these thieves go to is unbelievable. Car number plates are stolen around here too, you'll probably get a speeding fine now, oh dear, a sign of the times.
How was The Hollies Amy, are the new owners keeping up your standards.

Hi Dawn we didn't go down the lane that far I didn't dare look , it's a dead end they would have seen us , do you know the one thing on my mind this last couple of days has been me wondering if my Mistletoe has any berries ,I took such care of it they were lovely big bushy plants growing on the trees when we left I dread the thought of seeing the trees cut down ..
I have a Horrible feeling those nasty Walpoles who tried to claim our garden will approach the new owners about selling the orchard and veg garden in which case they will make a lot of money from it we were told they have got planning permission to build on the field edging on the garden thats why they were so keen to try to claim it from us .. we didn't want to move but are glad now that we've done it I wouldn't want all that building going on around us .I do miss my lovely garden but have come to terms with what we have and will make the most of it x
