Grasses

Hello

Me again looking for advice …..
I’ve been looking at pictures online of grasses on pond banks, giving great winter interest.

I’m looking for suggestions on varieties please. I don’t want grass/reed types to sit in the margins but nice floaty ones to sit high on the banks to arch towards the water but need to be big to give impact.

Thank you. :-)

I saw just what you are asking for at Kew a few years ago but didn't find out what it was. Maybe they would tell you?
Whatever you do don't get Carex pendula as I once did in my innocence, and after a decade I'm still digging up seedlings from the most unlikely paces...

Have a look at Stipa gigantea, Cimifuga simplex and Glyceria maxima (These came from an RHS book, not out of my head...)

Did you see my latest blog? I have several types of grasses in there but I don't know the names, but I can research them.

Thanks Thrup, I will look at those.
Stera, I think I have, Carex Pendula, came uninvited, a big clump now and if you try and dig it out the spade bounces back.
I will try and find a picture of Kew online. I have Stipa gigantea, I could move some over, good idea and I will google the others thanks.
Bathgate, thanks I will visit your blog :-)

Your welcome Dawn 😊

It depends on how tall you want your grasses to grow. Stipa ichu (it may have been renamed jarava ichu) is a medium-sized one that doesn't seed as badly as stipa tenuissima

Try googling Westshore nursery, Winterton. Lincolnshire. John and Gail Summerfield will be able to advise you. They are good friends of mine.

Stera when we moved here Carex pendula was here, boy! what a nightmare, O H had to use an axe to remove it!
Dawn I use Neil Lucas he is the grass expert, have you thought of growing Dierama it’s such a beautiful plant beside water, so many colours to choose from....I like the smaller Pampas grasses too....

Interesting blog, Dawn ... adding to GoYpedia All Year Interest, because I think it could be useful there, even though grasses vary at different times of year.
