A day off

Today we have spent the day looking at other peoples gardens.

A local village, Willoughby on the Wolds was holding an open day for 15 gardens.

I packed a picnic and off we went.

We managed to do 4 gardens, then went back to the car and had our lunch. It started to rain, and carried on for a couple of hours, it did not stop us though and we set about visiting the rest of the gardens, many of them were the pristine lawns and regimented borders, nice, but not really my cup of tea.

We did find some gardens with borders stuffed with flowers, just my cup of tea, glorious flowers, roses, clematis you name it, it was there and not a bit of earth or any weeds to be seen. In one garden the delphiniums were 6ft tall!!! I am lucky if mine get to 3ft. I saw lilies too which were growing in a pot that were taller than my husband.

I have to admit their soil is a lot better than ours, lovely dark loam.

I came away with ideas of using a lot more pots in the garden. We saw a water lily in a pot pool, I do miss the solar fountain we had some years ago. I have never found another one.

Of course, I did buy some plants, well one really has to…we also had tea and cake in the village hall….all in all a very enjoyable day. I am shattered and my feet do not think they belong to me.

Sounds like you had a lovely day and waterlilies in pots are always lovely! It's been like a rainstorm all day here with lots of heavy rain! On the plus side the garden doesn't need watering or the pond topping up!

What a nice way to spend the day - glad you found some inspiration there too. There are plenty of solar fountains available but most of them are pretty tacky - I've never seen one I would have. It would be nice if you could buy the pump, panel and nozzle without the plastic tat.
