Where to start?

So, I’ve asked this as a question, but wanted to blog about it, too.

Where to start?! :-S

This is my first full year in my new home. My garden is tiny; I may as well assume I don’t really have one, just a place for a few pots and a small raised bed made from an old freezer. The upside is that it’s south-facing.

What should I do? Spend a year playing with pot plants, composting, and weeding the garden/getting the lawn under control? Or be more ambitious? And what to grow in the raised bed? It makes an awesome cold frame as it’s insulated (old freezer, remember?) and is deep enough to grow pretty much anything; carrots are the obvious one (esp since the height keeps them immune to carrot fly) but for some reason I’m nuts for the idea of growing sweet potatoes or peppers in them…..

Having a toddler who`ll appreciate the lawn next year Annie, I`d be inclined to sort that, having a few pots planted up will give you something to tend and admire, that to my way of thinking always gives one a boost especially in the spring when things are beginning to bloom.
What have you done with the old freezer as regards drainage and are you disguising it in some way???, whatever you decide I wish you luck and mainly enjoy it...

Getting the lawn sorted sounds like a good idea, so that your toddler will have that safe space to play in. Is there room for a climber or two on fences surrounding the back area .... that way you would not be taking up valuable ground space & it would give height-interest & 'soften up' the look of the area. Perhaps you might be able to grow something like ivy up the sides of the freezer, to disguise it? I love container gardening & there are so many beautiful pots & lovely plants which will thrive in them. Good luck with your new venture.
