The Daffodils of Kempley

Sid

Just over the Herefordshire border in Gloucestershire, there is a collection of pretty villages set in gentle, pasteral countryside. They have nice names like Kempley and Dymock and Oxenhall. And if you go walking thereabouts, with a friend or lonely as a cloud, you may at once come upon a rather splended crowd…….

A host, of golden daffodils;

For in the Golden Triangle that lies between these pretty villages, there is something quite special to see at this time of year.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the Milky Way,

Ten thousand saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

I gazed and gazed, but little thought

What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the daffodils.

They are, of course, our very own little native daffodils, Narcissus pseudonarcissus, growing wild and free in the meadows and woods. Most of these pictures were taken in Betty Dawes Wood, which is a Gloucestershire Nature Trust managed site.

Shall we go for another stroll through the daffs before we go home?

Thank you all for the lovely comments. I'm sure I don't have to mention that the words are those of William Wordsworth - not mine LOL

Janey - oh no need to apologise! x Yes, I do think I'm very lucky to live near to such natural beauty. I'm lucky enough to have visited some really beautiful places in the world, but, really, can anything really beat the simple beauty of a daffodil or bluebell carpeted British woodland in springtime...?

Beautiful photos, Sid. Wordworth would be proud to be associated with them - enhanced his words wonderfully. Great blog.

She's a bit of a hypochondriac lol She's also getting more and more bad tempered with age. She will storm up town in her usual bad mood and suddenly remember she's come out without her walking stick! I do hope I don't get like that LOL
