For all of you who enjoy plant hunting, quizzes and gardens!

There have been some very interesting blogs on plant history on here ~ particularly from David, which reminded me of a garden we went to last year in Arisaig, Scotland. This garden is used for research and is connected with the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens. It is beautiful so I thought you may like to see some of my photos from that trip.

Perhaps you will discover a new plant or maybe you can name some of them in the photos ~ im sorry to say I dont know what they are all called but I loved them.

So for all of you who love plants, like a walk or a challenge or just seeing something beautiful here are a few photos of Larachmhor Gardens.

Firstly, lunch at the Rhu Cafe in Arisaig ~ well you have to get your energy before a walk;

It is a woodland garden with many trees and shrubs and of course a beautiful stream:

We visited in the middle of June ~ as it turns out perhaps the best time of all ~ with the azaleas in full bloom along with their delicious scent:

And now for the quiz ~ but I’m sorry to say I have to leave you to do the answers ~ cos I dont know them
Here are a few of the fascinating and gorgeous flowers that I cant name ~ but maybe you can:

I know this is an azalea, one I particularly like, but I dont know which type it is:

I think these are the seed pods of a flower that has gone, nevertheless they are still very attractive:

is this part of the rose family:?

I thought these were particularly attractive but again im sorry to say i dont know what they are called:

I should know this because i have one in my garden although its nothing like as good as this one ~ a crina something??

perhaps this is the toilet brush bush ~ oh no it couldnt be ~ its far too pretty

Its almost like a fairy glen in these gardens, they are not cultivated in a formal way but just tended with care to help nature along I think ~ which is the way i like it best:

this may be the simplest flower but its probably my favourite ~ clean and bright, pure and white, azalea but which one?

this is delicate and looks so good amongst the lichen or is it reindeer moss?

these fascinated me, just so perfect:

luxuriant ferns ~ so green!

I thought this rhodedendhron was a bit of a stunner ~ do you know what it is?

I saved this for last ~ a gold star for such a beautiful garden ~ it feels almost like a secret garden ~ its so quiet and you feel its just there for you!

If you ever get a chance to visit I’m sure you would love it ~ I think it must be one of Scotland’s best kept secrets!

Lovely photos and super memories of a gorgeous day out. No 8 is Crinodendron hookerianum (Chilean Lantern Tree) - I planted one in my last garden, but sorry, I don't know the names of the others. Beautiful though!

What a beautiful place . . . many thanks, Sticki, for a summery glimpse of Scotland. Great close-ups of the rhodos and azaleas, but sorry I can't name them for you. Too far away for a visit, so it's lovely to have a virtual tour.

Very beautiful and interesting place, StickiT! Thanks for sharing your lovely pictures and great memories when having such cold and snowy weather. :)
Not sure as for the names of the plants, but think No.9 is Fothergilla and the last pic is some kind of Hemerocallis. Be sure GoY members will help you with all those name correctly. :)

Littlelegs perhaps they did not have dessert lol great pics another beautiful place to visit, rather a long way for us though, cannot help with the names though, all look familiar!

5 Jan, 2011

im sure i could find you a dessert picture but i dont think we had one that day ~ if i was lucky i got coffee as well as the pate ~ OH wasnt in a good mood, but cheered up when we went to those gardens ~ i think the pate may have helped too!!
it made me smile when you noticed no pudding!!! i do love my puddings and cakes. i always think its a trip wasted if i cant have a nice cake and cup of coffee and take some nice photos!!!

Lovely pics, Sticki - looks like somewhere I'd like to visit, this year. Piuc No. 5 looks a bit like a Monarda flowerhead which has "gone over". Thought that it was Crinodendron hoopkerianum, and glad that Beattie has this, to confirm. Agree with Uma re the Fothergilla and Hemerocallis, and the lichen isn't "Reindeer Moss", which grows on the ground, but probably "Old Man's Beard" ? :-)))

PS Pic 1 is a stunning example of "Cuisinus grandifinus"!!

5 Jan, 2011

What a beautiful place Sticki...naturally I know the names of all the plants...erm....but I won't ruin it for everyone;-))

5 Jan, 2011

thanks for filling in some of the names.

do you have any seeds for cuisinus grandifinus david? cos i would really like to get some started ~ before i starve???

of course i knew you would know all of them BA ~ thats why i didnt put all their names on!!

5 Jan, 2011

Aye!! Have had had more than my share of producing "homegrown"pate foi "grass" over the festive Season, lol!!! Sorry, though, ran out of seed, long ago, for the oatcakes!! :-D)

5 Jan, 2011

Seems an interesting place. I love the little stream.
I think the one with little cones reminds me of a yew tree. That's the only one I may have a clue on lol sorry :D

6 Jan, 2011

5 is Embothrium coccineum
6 is Rosa moyesii
7 is Enkianthus campanulatus.

Nice garden, lovely to see it.

8 Jan, 2011

thanks vincent, will have to try to remember them.

I really enjoyed this wander around a Scottish garden on this grey January day! Thanks! No good at naming things though. Pink rhododendron, yellow azaelea, white rhododendron, etc etc.....best I can do!!:))

8 Jan, 2011

glad you enjoyed the wander

Number 13 looks more like a tsuga cone than a yew cone. The yew is quite nobbly. Whatever their names these wonderful photographs will remain a happy memory for a long time. I tried to find Larachmhor on the map but failed. Do you have any information as to how you got there and when they are open etc. I know how to get to Arisaig but where from there?

9 Jan, 2011

come out of arisaig ~ travelling south on the main road and its about 200 yards on the right ~ very little to show where it is ~ i think there was just a small name plate on the gate. i even tried to find it on google when you can go down the road ~ you can see the gates but no name.
im wondering if the tourist information have other details?

9 Jan, 2011

Thank you Sticki will check that out.

10 Jan, 2011

Must be a bit of microclimate there Sticki..I love embothriums (used to call them Ian Botham's!) Chilian Firebush, they are slightly tender. One of our garden centres had a woodland walk and they had a couple of them growing there.

25 Jan, 2011

I think I recognise the cerise rhodo too, I tried to buy one last year..if the name comes to me I will post it.

25 Jan, 2011

Tetrarch, I once came on an old overgrown garden in Kerry in S. Ireland and they were digging out 'wild' Embothriums with a digger and shoving them into a neighbouring hedge!!
