what can I plant now?
i ve got a big wooden box from the greengrocers. I'd like to fill it with compost and grow some kind of small vegetables, but can i plant now,(early Sept) that will grow through the autumn/winter? not cabbages!

What about salad leaves? Lettuces that you can cut-and -come again. They grow quite quicly, but wouldn't stand any frost, of course.

Yes, that is a good idea. Lettuce that you can cut off of every couple days and then spinach after it gets a little to cool for lettuces. Spinach will tolerate quite cool temps.

Well some varieties of broccoli are good in fall, kale, onions cauliflower, swiss chard, any of the vegies that are relatively cold hardy. Check out the online plant and seed companies for plants hardy in your zone.
