Runner beans

Asked on 31 Aug, 2008

My runner beans are looking very healthy with lots of foliage and flowers but large nubers of flowers are dropping off leaving just the stalks. As a result the bean crop is very much reduced. I grew them from seed in pots and planted out into a well prepared bean trench containing newspaper lining and well rotted manure. They are watered daily with a liquid feed at least once a week. Does anyone please have any suggestions about what I might be doing wrong?

It's normal for quite a lot to drop off. Also, birds sometimes pull the flowers off, which is rather annoying!! Could this be the reason?

Also, there aren't many bees and other pollinators around this year, so that might be contributing to the problem.
