phlox problem

I adore perenial phlox because of the scent they fill the garden with. However over the years I have been unsuccessful. The plants grow strong and healthy until the buds are just about to burst. Then every stem turns brown and dies. I orginally blamed it on the dogs but the same happens in my dog free zone I have planted them in various types of sun and shade but still the same thing happens. any ideas

I fear your Phlox has a virus. To clear it take root cuttings, and once sure they have taken, destroy the old plants., This best done in early Spring. Just cut them back for the Winter, removing cut material.
