Thank you for my replies to the rhodedendrum problem, we have most of it out now,but I want to use this area now for growing vegetables and I have read that the area will be sterile - can anyone advies me please?

I would't use the word 'sterile' but the ground will be deprived of nurishment. You should try and dig in lots of garden compost or a few bales of soil conditioner and add some bonemeal.
