Abutilon megapotamicum

Abutilon megapotamicum

This abutilon I save last minute and it moved into the house. Now a few months later its a bit thin and string, but I think it will come through alright. A bit large for inside.

Well worth the effort of saving!
Mine is producing plenty of buds.

I am hoping to see a bit more from it. Its been pretty still through winter so far, the other abutilon thompsonii has tripled or more in size.

I bet it will be lovely again in the summer Joseph. I am not very good at having big 'straggly' plants in the house overwinter, they look so messy, but I think you are wise to bring it in and it will repay you later. My abutilon Canary Bird is still flowering in the conservatory but it had it's really big show at Christmas time and is now having a bit of a rest....still flowering nicely though.

Its Lovely Greenthumb.....I have one too and I am waiting to see if it survived or not.......

Milky, I used to have Kentish Belle outdoors and it never started new growth until June, so don't give up on it before then!

Thanks. I'm glad I kept it, even a but thin. They'll be getting a good feed in February when the sun starts to shine again on the house. I'm hoping to see flowers again then. The thompsonii had been repotted so I expect blooming to begin again once it fills the new root space.

Not long now Joseph...thank goodness! :))

Tell me that again....lol. We dropped to -30 again today, staying for another week. This is when the indoor garden and the sun coming back in keeps me going. Outside wont notice until end of March.

-30!!!
How long before it's likely to get above freezing?

End of April. Then just in the day, nightly frosts til June. A bit of a wait still. Last year we melted by then, but this is a cold one so far. I think it might hold on. March the trees start looking fresh in the sun and the buds start to form. Amazing what heat they can collect in the cold when the sun returns, buds swelling with life.

GT:

Your Abutilon looks great for growing in the house.

Do you ever get spider mites on it?

28 Jan, 2011

Thank you Delonix. I have really not seen much spidermite in the house, I've been really surprised. I hasn't been blooming now for ages, but seems healthy enough. The other has become huge and gangley. I can't decide what to do with it for now.

GT:

Wow! I wish I could grow plants in the house without getting spider mites! It's been warm to hot the last 3 weeks here...and my few houseplants are getting infested with spider mites.

Abutilon will tolerate quite a bit of pruning...they seem to come back even stronger after a good pruning (that's my personal experience with plants in the ground).

I'll have to give them the chop. Should strike good cuttings as well for additional plants in the spring garden.

GT:

I've heard they make good annuals.
