I have 2 large Koi carps 5 Shubumkins several Goldfish and Sarasas and an 18inch Sterlet whom we have named Stuart. I will try and photograph in the sunshine

My pond is situated right under my kitchen window in a very small enclosed garden, within a village surrounded by the river thames and lakes. Yet the herons still come to my pond to feed on my fish. I was woken early one morning to a splashing sound, being in a comotosed state I stayed in bed listening, thinking that the fish were spawning. OH......... how wrong can you be. I eventually got up at 7am to find I was minus 5 fish and 1 had a hole in her back, plants and water were all over the path. I now have my pond netted all year round but I do lift it off if i'm sat outside relaxing (ha, ha).

the herons can destroy a pond and the fish as i found out when i first put one in. lost most of my fish the first yr,, one Koi survived and happy to say he is still doing well. i got one of those fake herons and so far it has done the job of keeping the real herons away

I've also got a fake heron standing guard on the pond, he's at the end nearest to my table and chairs (you can just make his head out of the long zebra grass). He is actually more visible from the long side of the pond. Unfortunately it still doesn't stop them. We have often seen them in the middle of the day stood on top of the shed roof, which is only approx 10 foot away from the pond and 20 foot from my back door. Cocky little tykes..................
