Short sharp shower

Woke up to another glorious morning and went into the garden for a bit of a potter – yesterday, after housework, was spent potting up my busy lizzies, and then I tackled hacking back the ivy on the fence behind my seating area, and decided also to lop off a branch of the Elderberry as it had grown a bit low over the seats, so after that decided to have an easier day today.

Hubby has almost finished our garden gate, with just the handles etc to attach now – a big sturdy wooden gate which replaces the old wrought iron one. We decided to change it mainly for privacy – next door’s kitchen window looks onto our gate and I always feel overlooked when I’m in the garden. It was wonderful to go out this morning knowing that no-one knew I was there!

Anyway, I pottered around, dead heading the odd flower and watering my pots. I came back in for a few minutes and suddenly it all went dark and the heavens opened! Typical, I thought, grumpily, and dashed out to bring in the washing which had only been out half an hour. I was a bit peeved to say the least.

Fifteen minutes later, the clouds had parted and the sun was back out, the garden looks so fresh and lovely, all the dust washed away. I went back outside for a look-see and noticed the SMELL! That lovely just-rained-fresh smell that you just can’t bottle! Gorgeous. Now I’m not so peeved, and couldn’t resist taking a few photos of the newly freshened plants.

I love your blog Jan :)

And, your gate is wonderful, hubby deserves a nice meal for that :)
I wish mine was as clever at DIY :(

Thank you Louise. My hubby can do ANYTHING! He's so clever and so practical. He cooks, he cleans, he does DIY, he fixes things. Maybe I should consider hiring him out! ... but hang on, I've got loads of jobs lined up for him. Oh well, you'll all just have to wait!

PS - we're not too sure about the colour of the gate - looks like it's been tango'd! It's supposed to be mahogany! Think we'll have to look for something else to stain it with to get it darker. I know it'll go darker with more coats, but up to now each coat just makes it go a darker orange!

Yes, maybe a different colour then.

Lovely flowers, fantastic gate ;-) I even like the colour.

I like your gate. Maybe I'll borrow your idea for the bottom of my garden :o)

Thanks all, I'll pass on your admiration to hubby. Unfortunately we spent an hour in B&Q studying all the different types of locks, hasps, bolts etc etc ... and came away with nothing. I made the mistake of saying I'd like to go with him (an excuse to wander around the plant department, and yes, I bought two, and some new pots!) but didn't realise that they haven't actually invented the sort of lock that my hubby wants. I got bored, so he's on his own now.

A lovely blog which made me cackle ( yes a witch!) I have a handy hubby too but like you want to see the finished job and not have to endure the work in progress. I would sooner have my hands in the soil and have been known to carry on when the rain comes down so that I can finish what I start. :~)))

So sorry forgot to say the plants are really beautiful and agree the rain bathed them very nicely.

Thank you Grannysue. It's nothing I haven't said to his face - I told him what I'd written (he spotted his gate on the computer screen!) and he had a good laugh.

My John just keeps looking over towards my p c when I am laughing. he doesn't say much but occasionally I turn the screen around to let him admire something or explain what is so funny but of course, "you have to be there" don't you?

And with GoY, we can be! It's lovely talking gardens with people who are of a like mind. Sometimes people's eyes glaze over ... luckily I've got my dad who could talk about gardens until the cows come home. My other big hobby is genealogy and that has the same effect (eyes glazing over). I certainly know how to pick em.

Genealogy is another hobby of mine too, and a few others on GoY aswell :o)

Maybe it's cos they both begin with a G? What else could it possibly be? Or just maybe because they're both fascinating, addictive, satisfying, and you're never finished! There's always something new to discover. Well folks I'm off to my bed now, night night - hope you all have a lovely gardening day tomorrow.

Night night Jan :o)

Beautiful flowers, particularly love the alstromeria and what a lovely colour osteospermum.
It's always a good idea accompanying hubbies to anywhere with plants - means he can pay for them for you, lol.

I'm awake again Hywel! Thanks Wagger. I was thinking of getting some more lillies - I've had this one years and it always comes back and looks beautiful. The only trouble with it, is that it seems to "grow itself out" if you know what I mean. It takes ages to flower, is at its peak for about a week or so, then starts to look straggly and past its best. Beautiful while at its peak though.
