the weatherstone

weather affects gardening greatly here in orkney. we get very strong gales and lots of rain. the weather is so variable it can change from sun to hail and back to sun again in a matter of minutes. this means the national weather forcast isn’t very reliable. so we devised our own system to check the weather.
we have a weatherstone. It is a large stone hung on a tree by a rope and it accurately tells the state of the weather. how does it work? I hear you ask in amazement.
simple really
if the stone is swaying from side to side then it is windy
if the stone is wet then the weather is rainy
if the stone is dry the weather is too
if the stone is white then its snowing

The stones certainly have been permanently wet this year Islander!
Apparently its been the wettest summer on record for this area so far this year but..... today.....wait for it..... We have had sunshine ALL DAY!
We have spent the whole day working in the garden, and its been the first day that we have spent outdoors without any rain for ages.
