A weed in Hawaii, hedge in the Azores and a favourite for hanging baskets in the UK, this incredibly popular genus of about 100 species has more than 8,000 hybrids and cultivars!
The fuchsia is loved for its flowers that drop down in groups or singularly in a variety of show-stopping colours. Some cultivars are all one colour but there are some really striking mixes in shades of pink, red, orange, purple and white.
Flowers of the fuchsia are a symbol of good taste in the language of flowers.

yes tasty every year i take lots of cuttings mainly for my brother who sells plants in his shop in england, but i also take them to give to other people as gifts. I think that is one of the most rewarding part of growing them.

cuttting them back is good for them. it makes them grow bushier, but cutting back delays the flowering for a week or two

We've this one on the side of the house. It's getting out of control, it may need a hait cut. It's starting to cover the hose reel. Islander, do they mind being pruned?

soill can make a difference, but amount of sunlight they recieve per day can also affect the depth of colour, glad you like it

Love Southgate, and especially yours, we have this one too, but the pink is much deeper, and the outer petals, quite a dark pink. I wonder if the compost or soil makes a difference to the colour?

This is one of the Fuchsia's i purchased in good faith from Thompson & Morgan. When i took this picture i was of the belief that a company like T&M would have the ability for correct labeling - I was wrong. I've no idea what this is though! Avoid T&M at all costs!

this is the alba, i have it in my hedgerow and it is over 6 ft high, my hedge is made up from alba and ricartonii. the ricartonii is over 8 ft tall they go well together. it loses all the leaves in winter but soon comes back to life in spring. would put a good mulch round the base as the only way you would lose it is if the frost gets at the roots

This is a very tough fuchsia. Well it was in my last garden. It grew so vigorously I decided not to bring it with me here. It would get too big.

I think you're right, it is the Alba. This being its first winter, I'll be interested to see how it goes next year. The first winter is always the most dangerous but if you planted in the spring it should have had time to establish its root system. Fingers crossed . . .

Yes, they're definitely hardy, at least for winters in 'God's Own Country' where we are (SW UK for anyone who's wondering). They don't seem to care about soil type, they're remarkably drought-resistant once established and they like the sun but are happy in partial shade. The difficulty can be keeping them under control - I have two, one of which is now about 5ft X 5ft from an almost ground level cut-back at the end of March!!

I think that's the one I planted earler this year. Yours is obviously hardy, I hope mine likes it where it's planted.

Thanks for your interest! Yes, the flowers are very delicate and a beautiful pale pink. I regularly get requests from neighbours and passers-by for cuttings!! As understand it, F.m (the pink/white alba and the red version) are the 'originals' before hybridisation and other strange sexual practises happened! I find I prefer the simpler varieties rather than the frilly extravagances that have been foisted on us over the last 20 years or so. But, goodness, do these things grow!!!!
