Looking at some of Morrison’s lovely little Camellia plants prompted me to think back to when this one was planted about 25 years ago It now stands about a foot taller than me so its close to 7ft high and the same across not by any means the largest in the garden but a nice specimen.so when you plant leave plenty of room.

It's neutral to acid, we are on the edge of an ancient Forrest with little natural top soil and heavy blue clay and of course many disused mine shafts below.
Have seen several peoples gardens within a mile of me disappear down them.

It's gorgeous Brian ... I have two young ones ,they both have a kind of sooty black stuff on the leaves that I can't get rid of ,I've tried washing the leaves which i've found to be a hopeless task do you have any ideas as to how to treat them please ........

Very nice. Would like to know which one it is so I can steal the idea :)

Glad you mentioned the sooty black stuff Amy I have noticed this on mine, it has been in bud for a good month now but they don`t seem to be opening.

Amy Its commonly called Soot ,Its a small aphid type insect sucks the sap on the underside of the leaf dropping there kind of Excrement that falls where you see it on the leaf below.most insecticides get rid of it but some are on the list of recommendations on the box (they call it Soot) two doses a few weeks apart .you are stuck with the marks until new leave grow although soap and water gently scrubbing each leaf will move some of it if you have the time.
How about a mothers day present from OH clean the Camellia cheaper than a bunch of flowers.LOL

If you don't want to spray, check out www.greengardener.co.uk and get a biological control.
If it's any consolation, about half the camellias I saw in Kew Gardens have it as well

There are two things I have fond that are fatal to them and Rhodo's in pots, basically caused by the vast amount of root in the pot (this is the result of the way the growers feed them to sell them in flower at very small size) but thats a another story.
The roots go around and around and need to be teased apart and spread out ,the second thing the root ball needs to be soaked preferably dunk in a water until no more bubbles rise only then is it safe to re-pot.

What a beauty, love the colour.

Its a beauty. I have a similar one 'Donation' which is a williamsii hybrid which makes it a bit hardier than the japonica camellias. Camellias have masses of flowers too.
