Hi Great,

I have thought about growing veggies, i have a Border Collie dog who basically thinks she owns the garden so i have thought it would be wasted. I have wanted to get one of them potatoe growing bags, they look pretty easy.

Hi Andy, I joined yesterday! I usually go on facebook like Kimmy, butn last night realised I had been on GoY for an hour, when it only felt like 5mins!! We're like you, my OH Kev is great at projects, like building chicken and duck houses and has had more experience of gardening than me, but now I know what we want to achieve, I'm really getting excited about our garden! I will get som pics on here soon, so peopple can see what a true blank (muddy!) canvas our garden is! the front is great, we have herbs and flowers, strawberry plant and window sill salad, so we're getting there :)

Hello Emma,

Sooo many ideas and not enough time !!!!!! - nevermind the weather !!!

I have a German Shepherd, Andy, train your boarder collie. Magic has one part of the garden for you know what, which is as far away from where I grow my veggies as possible. She does try to 'help' those of you who have read my blogs know that I get a lot of 'help' and I do find that now and again she eats my veggies!!! I think she's giving me her expert advice ha ha.
Regarding the potato bags I grow all of mine in bags. Yes I know most of you don't approve but at least I know where they all are. Plus I had potato blight 2 years go and don't want to grow spuds in the ground for a while longer.
Welcome Emma, yes this site does take up all my time, but my adult children say it keeps me quite which is a bonus for them lol. Andy happy gardening

P.s I have been on line since 8.30 and I am still in my Pj's I really should jump in the shower!!! but its sooooooooooo addictive

5 Apr, 2010

Hello Great !!!

Yeah, i have always meant to teach her to "use" a specific part of the garden, i did when i lived with my mam but havent got round to it here. I should do though, they are very clever.

I mentioned the bags cos i get sucked in by those tele adverts and shopping channels that make them look rather easy. Monkey see monkey do as they say !!!

I can totally see why this can become addictive mind!!!!! Its all good though, i was wondering how you deal with the state of the grass when having animals? My lawn has become patchy in places, is there anything that could combat this Great?

Ta,

Hi Andy. I'm a new member myself and have to say the members are a friendly bunch and very helpful.

Louse is so right about not getting other jobs done. Well who wants to be cleaning when you can go and potter in the garden and get going on a new project. Sunny days are for getting out in the garden and forgetting everything else - a great stress relief and very therapeutic.

5 Apr, 2010

I totally agree Ellie. I have been registered on here for like 2 hours now and have just been sat looking through loads of great photos and ideas.

VERY addictive !!! ha ha.

hi andy welcome to Goy its raining here ,hope it clears up later.

5 Apr, 2010

Hello Khayla !!! thanks, i do too !!!!!

5 Apr, 2010

Andy, dont worry about "patchy" grass! Thanks to our chooks and ducks we have NO grass!! That is why we need to work very hard this year! as our chooks were ex-batts, we wanted them to free range and as we had no garden to speak of, it didnt matter, then along came the ducks and the grass was history!! However, we do have fab conpost we can put to good use when we do get stuck in and create a garden all people, animals and plants can be proud of :)

I like grass Emma and want a nice lawn !!!!!! :--) Is keeping chickens easy?

Hello Mavisc, there is plenty of friendly people, i have noticed that straight away! its great, the sun is appearing here in Teesside as i type !!!!

5 Apr, 2010

Well my grass isn't looking too great at the mo A very long time ago I seeded it. It was ok for a number of years. Then I started to grow veggies the dog plus rabbits well it is a bit of a mess like yours. I keep thinking when I have some spare money *(yeah right!!) I will get it turfed. I guess its about getting the right grass i.e. for heavy traffic and limiting the amount of free range the animals have. I have often wondered about keeping chickens as I want to be as self sufficient as poss. But I have foxes!!! nuff said

welcome Andy apple-- i see you've found it as addictive as everyone else here, its a lovely community with a vast range of knowledge ( and not just about gardening ) Its a friendly place to be, people share their highs-- and their lows, we have folk from most continents and I've learned about gardening all over the world--absolutly fascinating talking to folks ' downunder' whose summer is over !

5 Apr, 2010

Welcome, I wish you many years of enjoyment in your garden.

5 Apr, 2010

A big welcome to GoY from another AA....and fellow Northerner.....the sun is just starting to shine here in Northumberland. Enjoy :-)

5 Apr, 2010

Welcome from me too Andy :~)).

5 Apr, 2010

Glad you're enjoying your first day :) One of many to come I'm sure.
You are already getting lots of ideas. We all feel as though we are on the starting blocks at the moment, but gradually our plants will run away with us lol.

5 Apr, 2010

Yep, once you've got their home sorted, and a run built it easy! Well, we've had no problems so far, except for one of our ex-batts passing away this winter, but to be honest we knew not all of them would make it... The others are blooming :) They just get worn out sooner from their previous "life" I would honestly recommend chicken keeping to anyone, its fun, the chooks are funny and beautiful (truat me, they are!) and eggs fresh is amazing! They are nothing like shop bought ones, yummy!! (ducks eggs are delicious too!)

We too like grass, so are aiming to rediscover the joy of a green carpet once more! The feathered family members will still be able to roam in their area, but we will have an area too what is green :D

5 Apr, 2010

big welcome from me as well .you will wonder what you did before you found us.LOL

5 Apr, 2010

Well, thank you very much to everyone who has put a really nice hello comment!!! :--)

5 Apr, 2010

Welcome from me, as well - and to Emma! It is a great site - what would we do without it? (Shift the layers of dust, maybe! LOL)

5 Apr, 2010

thanks Sanbaz, im just reading about your pond project now. Im debating whether to get a pre formed one or pond liner.

5 Apr, 2010

Hello Spritz, thanks. its a fab site !!! :--)

5 Apr, 2010

well if you get a pond liner plez make sure its level and at least 12" overlap, ive done more to make sure this time, let it settle a couple of days before adding rocks/pebbles cause it will move and settle, thats what im hoping lol, good luck with yours ;o)

5 Apr, 2010

Thanks for the info Sanbaz,

Im not sure whether to get a preformed one or just get the liner!!!! i like the idea of having a preformed one and just digging the shape.

Im not sure !!!!

5 Apr, 2010

well they are easier, i got liner so i could have a more natural look i guess, it all depends on space to, if not alot of space i would go for performed one as you wont need to have room to overlap, with rocks and plants will soon look good,

5 Apr, 2010

Yeah, good thinking Sanbaz,

thanks very much, :--) muchos appreciated.
