Late Spring

I have had my first full day in the garden this year and it was glorious – 10th March 2010. On Breakfast news there had been an article about late daffodils and, sure enough, when I compare a picture I posted here from 9th March 2008 with a picture taken today – the difference is striking.

As you can see, this time in 2008 Narcissus ‘Fortune’ and Narcissus ‘Jet Fire’ were in bloom as were the hellebores – and the grass was green. This year, neither Narcissus is even in bud and the grass is still that dull winter brown. It had been frosen here and/or under snow practically every day from mid December to the beginning of March. The only colour I have today is some Crocuses that have started to bloom. However, I did see a gem that I might have cut down by now if the weather had been better – late afternoon sun on the dead flower heads of Inula magnifica:

If I remember correctly last February was milder than usual. I know my daffs were in full bloom in March. Hopefully it will warm up by the end of the month and at last we can see some Spring colour. :o)
