Three Welsh pics

Our son came down from Lancashire to see us last week so we make the most of a fine day. We began the afternoon with walk down past Bosherston lily ponds, which were covered with white lilies for a good mile. There was heron lurking in the reeds at one point. We finally reached the beach – OH is showing off the stout stick he found to get me over the last quarter of a mile or so! You see that rock out in the sea just behind Mike’s shoulder? A few weeks ago there were two helicopters on the beach to rescue a man who got stuck I guess they were from two different rescue stations – anyway, an exciting day for the people on the beach!

This is the Green Bridge of Wales (though it doesn’t look Green to me!) It is on the MOD firing range but walkers are allowed there when there is no firing going on. I’d been wanting to see this for years!

And on the cliff I spotted some Rock Samphire – thrilled to bits as I’d never managed to find any before. It was too near the edge to risk a closer look (or even a sample!) though. You get a better idea of the sheer drop from the other picture. OH wouldn’t go within about ten yards of the edge! Its a completely sheer drop.

On the way back to the car we spotted Eupatorium, sloes and travellers joy, with literally hundreds of Polypodiums all along the hedge bottoms. Then off to the tea shop (how did you guess…)

What a lovely clear day to see that stunning scenery. I thought the second pic was of Durdle Door in Dorset, which as a child used to visit regularly.
Thank you for sharing.

What stunning views on such a beautiful day. Glad you didn't risk getting any closer to that sheer drop you mentioned!!

What beautiful scenery and looks like you had good weather as well. Can understand you wanting to see the green bridge.

Sorry, yesterday it wouldn't let me on the site and today it said it hasn't sent message then sent it twice.

Bosherton Lakes. It's some time since we visited these. They were lovely then. Must be more established now.

Pembrokeshire has some beautiful coastal walks and is well worth a visit. In the Fifties the beaches were empty of people. Bit of a change a few decades on!

(Durdle Door is worth a visit also! Remember the scene from "Far from the Madding Crowd" where Sgt Troy walked into the sea?)

Depends when you go Eirlys. This beach (and many others) is almost empty except in August! And it wasn't exactly crowded when the photo was taken...
Lots of people enjoying Broadhaven North ( a good half hours drive away from from Broadhaven South!) this afternoon but they were well spread out. Off season there are usually just a few couples exercising their dogs.
I'd forgotten Troy marching into the sea! I hadn't heard of Durdle Door, which looks rather more accessible than the Green Bridge which doesn't have a beach, but further along the coast here there is a formation known as Church Door (can't find my photo )
We haven't been to the West Country for years though we used to have a winter week in Exmouth every year at one time.- but since living here we've hardly been anywhere else...

Exactly Sue - you really don't need to go anywhere else when you have this gorgeous scenery on your doorstep. It looks fabulous - and lovely to see your family too (your son is a bit like our 'Cornish' one (who is 45!). I'll see if I can find a pic of him . . .

Beautiful

. . . I've found a photo of our son and posted it for you Sue . . :)

Wonderful scenery around there. I can't go near it lol. Did you go to Stack Rocks and Huntsman's leap - terrifying !
I love the lily ponds. Haven't been there for years.

I now fancy a few days on the lovely Pembrokeshire coast: maybe next year?

Thank you Siris, Wildrose Callie and Jen.. No Hywel we've never been right up to Huntsmans leap but have seen photos. We've been down to St Govans chapel though. I can understand you not wanting to go near the edge - David is the same. But it was so tempting to see the Samphire...

Thanks for the photo Sheila - have replied on your Pics page.
Be sure to let me know if you come to Pembrokeshire, and best to come in mid May for the wild flowers! A trip to Skomer when the bluebells are out and the puffins wandering about all over the place is unforgettable.

I've been to the chapel too. It isn't a shear drop. The others I can't look at.

Thanks Sue. May seems to be the best month for holidays everywhere. . .

Probably true, and you avoid the crowds as well.

1958/9 visited Pembroke Dock. A cousin was stationed around there and took us to see the Sunderland Flying Boats. They were beautiful! He actually flew them.

I also remember the countless rabbits on the Pembrokeshire lanes: hundreds of them, with many sadly killed by vehicles.

Lulworth Cove is well worth a visit though sitting under the cliffs is not to be recommended! You do so at your peril.

In the Julie Christie film there were some lovely shots of Durdle Door, the rock arch in the sea.

I know what you mean about not wanting to visit other areas, Sue. We feel the same about Dorset.

25 Aug, 2017

No rabbits around on the lanes these days Eirlys. That's one problem we haven't had in the garden. I don't think we've ever been to Dorset though we have spend a few holidays in Devon. We don't go anymore as its very similar here but without the crowds...

The Dorset coast is very beautiful, and it is possible to find quiet, rocky coves, particularly off season. There are no motorways in Dorset, which helps! I admit I do love Lyme Regis because of all the fossils embedded in the stones on the beach.

I prefer Devon to Cornwall to be honest, but have to admit, Dorset takes some beating. We have the countryside and the coastline.

Have you ever visited Kimmeridge, Sheila? It has a "nodding donkey" where oil is extracted. The Folly is worth the climb. Our Son and his wife stayed there for a week so we were able to view the coast from the top of the tower. The rock pools when the tide is out are great fun: lots of little fish and anemones and even seahorses if you know where to look!!

In the village itself is a Fossil Museum, well worth a visit.

28 Aug, 2017

Yes, Eirlys, I have been to Kimmeridge. It's one of my sister's favourite places (she lives in Ferndown); you've encouraged me to visit again!

29 Aug, 2017

Well do visit the Fossil Museum. Younger Son and founder's daughter were an item (!) when they were teenagers and we were invited to view the fossils when they were kept in a large room at her home. That was some time ago and there are a lot more specimens exhibited now.
