A week in East Devon

In the last week of September we spent a relaxing week at Ladram Bay, near Otterton, which I thought some of you may like to share.

Sunshine every day bar one, always a bonus for a UK holiday!

The rocks and cliffs along the Jurassic coast are quite awesome .

The photo above made me think of holidays in the Algarve, Portugal.

We had a day out in Sidmouth where we climbed the Jacobs Ladder steps, mind you, about six steps from the top I foolishly looked down and went all of a dither with vertigo and OH had to almost push me to keep moving!

The view from the top was definitely worth the climb

The wonderful Connaught Gardens are situated at the top of the cliffs (Bjs posted a blog on these gardens in July, should you wish to compare the planting then and now)

It was lovely to see so much colour for the time of year

On yet another warm and sunny day we took a ride on the narrow gauge heritage tram from Seaton up to Colyton, riding through the glorious Axe Valley where there were numerous wading birds in the two Nature Reserves.

The river boat cruise from Exmouth up to Topsham was fabulous, good commentary from the skipper and wonderful views of the lovelyDevon countryside.

We alighted from the boat at Topsham, had a rather expensive couple of Lattes in a hotel and caught the train back to Exmouth, passing by the Commando Training Centre for Royal Marines at Lympstone, no photos of them though!

It has been many years since we were in this part of Devon and it came as a complete surprise to see how Exmouth looks these days with the Marina and apartments. There seems to be a blue-print design, as it looks so similar to ones near us in Littlehampton and Shoreham-by-sea in Sussex.

I hope you enjoyed the scenes from East Devon.

My brother lives in this part of the country now, so it was nice to see pictures of the area...isn't it lovely? I'm so glad you had good weather and took so many super pictures. Thanks for sharing your trip with us :)

I agree Dotty, a lovely part of the South coast ... sun and showers today ... good for the garden!

Well then Waddy, you must go and visit your brother often! My sis-in-law used to live near Truro in Cornwall ... an equally lovely county.

I just left a comment on one of your pics, asking if you had a nice holiday..and then saw this.. Obviously, you did !
I'm glad you both enjoyed your break,Shirley..We never got round to taking the boat ride, but maybe another time..
You were braver than me,to go up Jacobs Ladder..but isn't it a lovely place? We walked round the Marina at Exmouth one evening.and it's also very similar to the one at Eastbourne too..I'm glad it lived up to your expectations :o) x.

We phoned up to book the boat trip, just as well as folk were being turned away until the next cruise. I did smile as one lady was knitting the whole time ... she stayed on the boat for the return trip ... probably knitted a garment in that time ... lol!

Lovely pictures I am ready to go back lol getting a bit dark and cold today so it will probably be next year before I return.
Never thought of the steps being that high that is our evening walk Jamie and me along under the cliff up the steps through the park and back down the other side.

Oh, I am really feeling a bit jealous! What a lovely lovely place, and how lucky you were with the sunshine too! The gardens look amazing. Shirley, you are brave, I don't fancy those steps one bit!

Thank you so much for this blog - I re lived our many winter holidays in Exmouth. Did you see spoonbills and avocets on the river cruise? We climbed those steps with CMSue and Bikerbob but it was winter - so lovely to see the gardens in summer. How the marina has changed - quite up market these days!

Another visitor to my home town (Exmouth). We used to live by the docks - they pulled our bungalow down to build the flats and marina. Glad you had a good time in East Devon, Shirley.

Looked an idylic holiday to me Shirley plenty of interesting places and the scenery looked majestic, but theres no way you would have got me up those steps even for that amazing view.lol.

same here, Stroller - my knees aren't good with stairs these days; of course, if they put a lift in ...

Fran, we didn't do any fossil-hunting, just admired the scenery really.

Brian, I can manage climbing steps, I just made the mistake of looking down through the open treads! I would love to return next year too, lovely place for a holiday.

Thanks for your lovely comments Barbara, Karen, Bathgate, Phyl and Hywel ... :o)

Andrew, I'm not sure I like the exterior design of the apartments around the marina. Perhaps they are lovely inside though?

Steragram, yes we saw Spoonbills and many other birds, no Avocets though. I remember your blog when you met up with CmSue and Bob.

Looks a great place Shirley, well worth the climb to get the photo's, we love to explore but have to admit I'd sooner climb a rocky set of steps rather than those sort, bit daft I know, lol, you had a lovely holiday as regards the weather as can be seen in your smashing photo's....

So glad you managed to see spoonbills Shirley- our guide on the boat trip said he thought he could see one but that's as far as it got. We did see avocets though. I was surprised you remembered the blog on our visit!
