The Garden Community for Garden Lovers

finally planted up.

Well this is the third part but it’s not in the same league as the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The border has rested for at least a week and I then took the hoe to all the seeds that had sprouted. So many so soon.

Decided to plant the Magnolia ‘Susan’ that was given to us when my mother-in-law died. It has been in a big pot for 15yrs now. To say it was pot bound is putting it mildly.

So the root ball has been cut and teased out, the planting hole filled with leafmould and a dusting of fbb and it is all set for its new home.

I went round the garden collecting a range of plants that have been in pots for weeks and months. I have placed them and replaced them and then re placed them. Hope the positions are right. Also put in bulbs that had been growing in pots around the pond.

After a quick check with Poppy, the rabbit, I started planting.

I put in two Skimmia’s, one of my favourite shrubs, as well as Ribes speciosum.
There is a slight yellow theme in the far corner with Mahonia ‘Lionel fortescue’ a small flowered rose ‘Ghiselaine de feligonde’ as well as some creamy white astilbes and aruncus. Then there are several hostas, some named, others with names lost in the darkness of time.

The bed then curves just enough to get some sun, about 2-3hrs in the afternoon, so in went Echinacea ‘white swan’ and Penstemons Laura, Amelia Jayne and Czar. From another border I stole a couple of hardy geraniums and re planted the Paeony rubra in its original position in front of the camellia.

From behind the garage I recovered the bags of 4yr old well rotted beech leaf litter and added that to the fresh planting. At that point the robin came down for a good rummage and a good feed.

What next? Well we will have to let everything grow away and come the spring the bulbs will be out too.

Time to sit back and enjoy the garden, perhaps take a photo or two.

Here is one of the front garden corner that has all sorts of lovely plants in it.

So thats next then …….

Susan will be able to stretch her legs , does poppy never make a break for it under the wire.

yes poppy is a digger unlike her neighbour honey. he is such a good boy. poppy pulls grass and will if not watched dig down. we have always managed to stop her before she gets to freedom. makes a mess on the grass though.

Lovely job Sbg saw Magnolia Susan in flower at that nursery in Beverley lovely shade to it ..Poppy looks content our old Rabbit Bun says Hi would love to play but old joints creaking now shes over 12.

poppy is a very dominant bunny and 'holds' [if you get my meaning] hunny bunny down. vet suggests we get her 'done' to stop this behaviour. hunny was done when he was little.

the magnolia hasnt flowered for many years. my own fault i know. hope she enjoys the humus rich soil.

Lovely to see your garden freshly planted. The Magnolia sure was pot bound! Must have had more roots than soil, no wonder it hasn't flowered for some years!

and there were lots of oregano seedlings, dandelions and a sedge in the pot too.

22 Jul, 2009

how did that happen or did you plant them?

23 Jul, 2009

bad gardening mookins. self sown oregano not weeded out then self seeded into the pot. dandelions just blow about and i never get to fully weed the path. i'll do a blog on it one day [have to pluck up courage to tackle it] and as for the sedge ... no idea. probably a seed in the otting compost i have used in the past to top the pot up.

still all sorted out for her now. she is residing in humus rich soil.

That's a job well done, with many years of pleasure to come.

noted down all the plants in this border [24ft long by 8ft narrowing to 5ft] . there are approx 45 species in total 60+ different plant varieties including the shrubs. i was amazed at this number. and there are still spaces to squeeze other plants in too. :o)
