the beauty of wood.

I know some of you ladies have husbands who turn wood, well so do I.
We also saw the lovely pieces turned by Steveb. Well I told him about some of my beloved’s work and I have finally got round to taking photos of some of his pieces.

A yew bracelet for me [and many more for the daughters].

He then decided to make small vases, again for me. These 2 are spalted beech and the tallest is 8" and the smaller about 6".

This one is burr elm and like the previous 2 has been made fully water proof so it is functional; it stands about 9" tall.

Then of course there are the plates. The first is zebrano 12" diameter, more of an ornament. Then our large bread plate in beech 18" diameter, nearly takes over the table! Or the arm chair!

Of course he has watched dvds to inspire and these are: a fruit bowl with crackle glazes and a 24" sycamore plate cut out and stained as an art piece. The stalk is turned ebony.

I have a set of dipping pens and I kept my nibs in a small tuppaware box, not very pretty I know but again hubby came up trumps.

He also makes pens, needle holders, goblets, salt & pepper mills and ear-ring stands but no photos of those as yet. I am waiting for a 2 plate cake stand but I havent found a wood that I reallly like.

So I tread mud into the kitchen and he brings the shavings in. Good job neither of us are very house proud.

I am always amazed at the fantastic grain in the different woods. I hope you like the work and effort he has put in to just one of his hobbies.

Oh yes, he has also made furniture, a wall clock and the rocking horses for the girls. he also makes/renovates bikes and in the not too distant past cars too. he sails and is currently the skipper of the humber keel Comrade. he works full time too. [he often makes me tired just watching him].
as a family we all canoe and yes he made a canadian stlye one for all of us to go in. we all fish and he made some of his rods from split cane. i made the rod and reel bags as he cant sew that well. something i am better at! oh and i am better at giving birth :o)

So skilled - and artistic. Reminds me of sculptors who say about a bit of rock and seeing the figure in it waiting to be released - this is the same sort of thing with wood. He releases the beauty within.

Hello, thanks for all the lovely complements. Stevebuk- he has made lots of pens, earring stands, eggcups, candle sticks. spoon handles and dibbers/pricker-outers. I'll see what I can find around the house to photograph. He has also turned resin pens for the girls and i think victoria [11yrs] made most of her own favourite pen. he wasnt keen on the resin and composite materials. the eldest turned a banksia nut. I dont like the vibration through my body, too much like the dentist :o(
