this Saterday is the big plant sale in Narberth. it is run by the local community to raise funds for local arts projects.
the sale is in the playground of the primary school. over 35 stals last year. its my favorite plant sale of the year. i run a small nursery on a farm in the middle of knowhere, as do many of the stall hoders. this is the on day a year when we get to see each other.
the day starts very early and we all arrive at about 8ish. then theres a crazy couple of hours while we all try and unload our plants and set up our stalls. the trouble is i will keep being distracted when i see old friends and all their plants. my daughter Lilly is comming with me to help which means i will be let loose in a plant hunters heaven. as i am a self confessed plantaholic its like being in a sweetshop…lol
the gate opens at ten am, there is a charge of one pound, but usualy by 9.30 a cue starts to form. dozens of plantaholics all eager to find that plant they’ve been searching for. sales are usualy very good. but the best time is after oneish when it calms down and because Lilly is there i get to go shopping or in many cases swopping. many of the stall holders will swop plants with each other. each year there are many charity stalls selling plant and thats where i find oddies like succulents and cacti.
there will be many small specialist nurserys there. Sally from Dyffryn Gwyddno nursery will have her bamboos, Ken and his lovely daughter Jasmine will have their wounderful display of pond plants, Andy and his herbs, and Picton castle nursery will have a fine disply of woodland wounders. you can find us all on www.pembrokeshiregrowers.co.uk.
so heres hopeing for some nice weather, lots of people and some freat cakes from the cake stall…;-))

I'll try and make it for another year i hope. Can you remind GOYers next year earlier in the Spring of the date pls? That would be great. Then I'll have two good reasons to come to Narberth, as my ancestors lived there. One of them, a bygone ironmonger by the name of James John even has a road named after him and the old shop.
He was my Welsh Grandpa's brother!
How near Narberth do you live?
